REF5045: About the concern when Vout>Vin.

Guru 10385 points

Hi team.

Please let me know if our situation is problem.

I care about Vout>Vin when the power is off.

When it,

Vin=0V

Vout=4.5V(From C5)

C5=5uF

There is a specification of the short circuit current, but what else do you have to care about?

I think there are no problem in discharging the capacitor.

Sincerely.

Kengo.

  • Kengo,

    If I understand correctly, you are asking whether there could be a device issue when the capacitor is discharging from Vout = 4.5V down to 0 after Vin is brought low. There should be no issue here; the current that is being sunk in this application will be very small and cause no problems to the device. The short circuit current spec would only be hit if there was a very high capacitance value causing the discharge to be very slow.

    Thanks,
    Abhinav.
  • Hi Abhinav.
    Thank you for your reply.

    I understand that there are no problem even if there was a discharge of capacitor(5uF).
    Should I care about current instead of voltage when Vout>Vin ?

    Sincerely.
    Kengo.
  • Kengo,

    You should be mindful of current, yes, but in this case, the current should not be enough to trigger any shutdown in your application. Voltage also matters, but only when we get into HV range, 4.5V poses no threat.

    Thanks,
    Abhinav.
