SM72295: SM72295, BQ24650

Part Number: SM72295
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

I have a new project as below

Input: Solar 20V

output for 4s Lion Bat,  Max 8A,

Shoud support MPPT,

Can i select the SM72295+MSP430?

At the same time, i also found the BQ24650 can support the MPPT, What are the pros and cons of each, thank you.

  • Hi Jack,

thanks for your question on SM72295, I am the apps engineer with this device. This part should work for your application.

Let me check into BQ24650 to see how it compares with MPPT and ill let you know the pros/cons of each.

What do you plan on using as the FET and switching frequency?

Do you have any other limitations?

    thanks,

  • Hi Jack,

Besides BQ24650 being a controller+driver and the SM72295 being just the driver (that's also dual half or full bridge) both should work however SM72295 needs a pwm controller like c2000 or msp430 to switch the FETs with MPPT. The controller has a voltage feedback that is bandwidth limited and is less BW than the internal HV current sense amps from SM72295. Using the SM72295 allows you more flexibility that is integrated to use more powerful FETs as well as dual or bidirectional current sensing solution with minimal external circuitry for example. However the bq device has a internal charge pump supply to allow for near 100% duty cycle and can operate without a separate controller. SM72295 + msp430 can work for you, let me know if this helps answer your question or you have any other questions.

    thanks,

  • Hi Jeff

thanks for your support. i will check the SM72295+MSP430 first, thx
