EMB1428Q: EMB1428Q datasheet precludes operation with 12V battery system

The EMB1428 datasheet, under Operating Ratings, gives an allowable VSTACK to GND range of 15V to 60V. This precludes using the part with a 12V battery in an automotive application. Is this specification correct?

Hi Brent,

Can you please explain the intentions of your application? The typical use case is to be able to transfer from the cell pack and the 12V battery so it is possible you may be confusing the pack range with the 12V battery. Hi Taylor,

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm not confused but I can see why you might think so. My application is to use the EMB1428/1499 with a 4 cell bank pack, max 14.6 volts. The datasheet says that the parts are usable with up to 7 cells per part set. To me that implies anywhere from 2 to 7 cells, but the min 15V stack voltage specification precludes any fewer that 5 series cell banks with lithium ion. So if that's true, the parts must be only for 5 to 7 cells if only one part set is used.

Hi Brent,

Ok I understand now, so the 12V battery is not the issue but rather the minimum pack voltage requirement. It is true that we cannot guarantee device performance if the 15V Vstack minimum datasheet requirement is not met. Is your intention to stack these 4 cell packs or is it just the one? I highly recommend looking into our latest bq79606A device that is a stackable 6 channel passive cell balancing device if you do not absolutely require high ACB current.
