We are in development of a product that we currently have the BQ24079 part in the design. One of our engineers has had two of these parts fail. He was using a power supply in place of the battery and USB to control our device. During normal development he has had no issues but the two times he has had the part fail he was booting the computer while connected. Both parts smoked when they failed. Is it possible this failure is caused by using a power supply in place of the battery? I am concerned that this is going to be an issue once the board is finalized or worse in the field.

Hello,

I've done multiple tests in the lab using a sourcemeter instead of a battery and i haven't had any issues. Was the power supply current limited? The device smoking means there was either a short or a higher than expected amount of current on the device.

Yes he had the supply limited. Here is what I thought happened but I want to make sure. I thought that something may have happened when the PC rebooted that caused the chip to try and charge the power supply causing the short. It is painful to replace the part so I don't want to try and reproduce it.

Does this seem possible?
