BQ24161B: Battery Temperature Fault

A over/under temperature fault doesn't seem to be reported by the STAT_X bits in the Status/Control Register.

During normal charging from USB the bits show:

100- Charging from USB

as expected.

However, when the temp gets too high/low I see:

010- USB Ready

when I would have expected:

111- Fault

is this how the part is supposed to work?

Hi Robert,

The STATx bits (B4:B6) report IN/USB ready or not detected and whether the charger is in the charging state (including waiting for the temp fault to clear) or terminated.

The FAULTx bits (B0:B3) report faults including battery temperature fault.

That doesn't really answer my question.

Why don't the STAT_X bits indicate Fault during a temperature fault? They aren't correctly showing the real state.

Additionally, the FAULT_X bits don't clear an reading as the part spec says they should.

Hi Robert,

Temperature fault is sub-state within the charge state. To get clear picture of operation, you have to read both the STATx and the FAULTx registers.

OK, but it's very non-obvious that "temperature fault" isn't a fault state.

There are only 3 lines of description in the data sheet for these fields in the register. Not very helpful.
