TPS61291: Buck-Boost OR Boost Bypass DC DC Regulator

Part Number: TPS61291
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61099, TPS630242, CC1310, TPS63802, TPS63060, TPS63805, TPS63806, TPS63020, TPS63036

Hi,

1. I have an application where I need to supply(controller) 3.3V and min is 3V and using LiMnO2 CR2477 Coin Battery which rated 3.3V,1000mAh.

My load may take max of 200mA but in the Data sheet they have clearly mentioned that Supply shout be able to provide max of 1A.

have checked these two TPS61291 OR TPS61099 as both are boost latter without bypass mode. But unfortunately I'll not be able to use both of these are rated for 200/250mA.

Do you recommend any other part number with max load current above or equal to 1A with bypass / Buck-boost.

2. We might change the battery to other Li Ion (may be cobalt) which full charged will have 4.2V and has to maintain 3.3V So in this case Boost with bypass won't be helpful. Is the Buck-Boost is the only way to achieve this?

As I'm looking into this TPS630242 which has  a lot less efficiency at 50-55% at less current which in our standby current (100uA). Any suggestions?

Looking forward to your answer.

Thanks.

  • HI Lakshminarayana K N.:

May you share your Vin range, Vout target and load condition more details? I'm little confused about that why you need current capability above 1A. And you need the by-pass mode right? What's the purpose for by-pass? To save the power or regulate the Vout when Vin is higher than it.

For the second question, I also need you double confirm your spec. If Vin=3.3-4.3, Vout=3.0-3.3, I think the buck converter should be a batter solution.

  • Vin range of Module is 3-3.3V Typical-3.3V(GPS).

    Vin range of controller(CC1310)-1.8-3.3V.

So Vin - 2.2-3.3V(Coin cell) output will be 3.3V

So I've thought to supply const 3.3V all the time using buck-boost regulator TPS6306.

I also have a cellular module (@3.3V) which consumes a max of 200mA when active and during sleep, it'll be 10uA. Datasheet mention that for cellular supply should be able to provide 1A.

Yeah Initially I thought bypass with boost will be better but we may change Coin cell(max 3.3V) to Standard Licobalt oxide battery(max 4.2V In this case it seems to buck-boost would be better Output has to be always 3.3V).

    In this case, Vin-3V-4.2V Vout-3.3V.

    Thank you.

  • HI Lakshminarayana K N.:

If "Vin - 2.2-3.3V(Coin cell) output will be 3.3V ", may I know why you prefer Buck-Boost? As the boost converter could support this case well.

For another application as "Vin-3V-4.2V Vout-3.3V.", the buck boost converter is recommended.  I will recommend you have a look at TPS63802,.It's a high-efficient, low IQ buck-boost converter, with only 11-µA operating quiescent current.

  • " may I know why you prefer Buck-Boost? As the boost converter could support this case well. "

Yes I could've used Boost converter but in case if the user wish to use other type of Li ion Battery then boost may not be useful right?

Thanks for linking to Buck-boost but the part TPS63802 doesn't seem to be exist in Digikey. How may I proceed?

    I'd feel TPS6306 better option.

  • Hi Lakshminarayana:

Got it. Thanks for your supplements!

Does "TPS6306" means "TPS63060" It's designed for higher voltage application, and it need Vin higher than 2.5V.

TPS63802 is sample available, and TPS6380x family WCSP package version TPS63805,TPS63806 is release to the market already.

Otherwise, we have TPS63020, it's another good solution.

  • Hi,

It's TPS63036. Sorry for the typo error while mentioning part number.

  • Hi Lakshminarayana:

I afraid TPS63036 can't support the 1A load when Vin=2.2, Vout=2.2V. You could take the Figure1 in datasheet as a reference. And the relationship of Iin and Io is Vin*Iin*Eff=Vo*Io.
