TPS7A45: About reverse current protection operation

Part Number: TPS7A45

Hi,

Could you tell me about TPS7A45 reverse current operation?
Customers are considering the following diode installations.
The background is to prevent the output voltage from rising during reverse current protection.
Should customers install this diode?

Regards,
Yusuke

  • Hi Yusuke,

According to the datasheet, the built-in protection can be described as the followings:

The devices are protected against both reverse input and reverse output voltages. In battery-backup applications where the output can be held up by a backup battery when the input is pulled to ground, the TPS7A45xx acts as if it has a diode in series with its output and prevents reverse current flow

If you do have current flowing from the load side, as TPS7A45 blocks the current flowing into the LDO and the current will create voltage rise at the output side of the LDO. To prevent overvoltage on the load circuit, a diode could be added to discharge the excessive current from the load to the input side of the LDO. When doing this, please make sure the input side of the LDO will have a path to discharge the current and not let the voltage to exceed the absolute max of 20V for the input pin.
