LP8758-E0: Thermal Concerns / Heat Sink

Part Number: LP8758-E0
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP8758,

Hi Team,

My customer is looking at using this LP8758 device, but one of their main concerns is it's thermal behavior. Do you think a heat sink will be required when using this device at its full capacity? Or is its loss low enough that we don't need to be concerned about heat dissipation?

Thanks,
Mitchell

  • Hi Mitchell,

We have not seen customer utilize heat sinks for this device in the past to my knowledge. The efficiency is excellent for a device this size and thermal characteristics well defined for customers to evaluate based on their board.

That said, "full capacity" is a bit hard to define. Generally the system isn't able to sustain maximum current on all regulators simultaneously for extended time for example. Most use cases have some baseline DC currents in ACTIVE with brief transient currents spikes.

There is an EVM available (LP8758-E0EVM) if they want to try out their unique case.
