UCC28065: Is it possible to make a 3KW power supply

Part Number: UCC28065
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28070, UCC28064A

Hi  TI Friends;

        Is it(Ucc28065) possible to make a 3KW power supply ?Is there a THD test report here?

Thank you

  • Hello Tony,

    Thank you for your interest in the UCC28065 Interleaved Transition-Mode (TM) PFC controller.

    Given enough time and money, anything that does not violate the laws of physics is possible.  So: Yes, a 3-kW PFC supply using UCC28065 is possible.

    But such a high power level using TM is generally considered to be impracticable. Depending on your minimum input voltage specification, the peak currents in each phase can range from ~25A to ~52A and the MOSFETs will need gate-drive buffers between the controller and the MOSFETs.  Along with other considerations, such a design is generally considered to be very uneconomical even though it is possible.  Section 9.1 (page 37) of the UCC28065 datasheet indicates that the practicable range of TM PFC conversion is between 150W to 800W.  Designing above and below these values is still possible, but the practicality diminishes unless special circumstances support the decision.

    A practicable alternative for 3kW is the UCC28070 Interleaved CCM PFC controller, using much lower current per phase.

  • Hi  Ulrich;

             Thank you your reply; and I want to know the different of ucc28065 and ucc28064A;Because recently ucc28065 was released;

    Thank you

  • Hello Tony,

    The UCC28065 has two major changes over the UCC28064A:

    1.  The UCC28065 is able to switch up to twice the maximum frequency of the UCC28064A, to enable you to reduce the size of the boost inductors.

    2.  The Zero-crossing Distortion Correction circuit has been removed in the UCC28065, because at higher frequencies this circuit adds too much on-time.

    Other than that, the UCC28065 is mostly the same as the UCC28064A.

    Regards,
    Ulrich

  • Hi  Ulrich;

          Thank your detailed explanation.
