LP8758-E0: Output capacitor package size

Part Number: LP8758-E0

Hello - I'm using the LP8758-E0 in a design that could be operating in high heat conditions so I would prefer to use X7R capacitors for the output and input. However the smallest 22 uF X7R caps are in a 1206 package, and the datasheet and reference layout recommend 0603 package caps. Do you foresee any stability issues in the extra distances of trace routing required for the larger capacitor? I'm looking at the layout example in Figure 44 of the datasheet. The larger Couts would mean the inductors get pushed further out and away from the IC. Could Cout be placed on the backside of the PCB or would you not recommend vias connecting the L and C?

Thanks for your help,

-Schuyler

  • Hi, Schuyler,

Thanks a lot for using our device in your design!

I don't see any stability issue that caused by the extra distances of trace routing required for the capacitor size change from 0603 to 1206 as long as making them as close as possible; we recommend Cout being placed on the backside of the PCB and then needing vias connecting the L and C.
