LM5085: External current limit

Part Number: LM5085
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM25085, INA180, LMV431, LM321

Hi

I'm building a battery charger with the LM5085.

I want to be able to set the current limit point from a DAC.

I have based the circuit on this application note

"Application Note 2157 Constant Current Constant Voltage Buck Converter
with LM25085"

However, I have changed the LMV431 to a comparator and had to ditch the LM321 which did not work. Changed to INA180.

See this technote from TI (https://www.ti.com/lit/an/sboa190/sboa190.pdf)

The problem occurs when the comparator pulls the ISEN pin to ground through the 5K resistor.

This causes the LM5085 to stop switching.

However it takes 650us before the LM5085 starts switching again.

Why does it take so long to restart?

This delay may be fine for a protection current limit but for a charger it reduces the average charge current by a factor of 10.

The only timing parameter in the datasheet close to the 650us is soft start which ranges from 1.4 to 4.3ms (min to max) (not really close)

Any suggestions?

Is this a soft start related delay?

Is this design salvageable? Is there anyway to remove or reduce this delay?

Thanks

Andre
