TPS53316: what is the difference between DE mode and HEF mode of TPS53316?

Part Number: TPS53316

Hi,

It's seem like no difference while I test the TPS53316—EVM both DCM and CCM  @ same load, the curve and switching frequency is the same.

So how to understand "In HEF, PWM modulator determines the switching frequency" that show in the datasheet?

and which application should choose DE mode? when HEF mode?

Best regards

Thank you.

  • Hello Mia,

What Overcurrent and frequency setting are you doing your tests on?

Are you trying this configuration on one given VIN/ VOUT/ Load?

    Let me know.
    Thanks a lot!

    Regards,
    Dorian

  • Hello Dorian,

    As following :

    test TPS53316EVM-075:

    1. test condition: 750kHz 6.5AOCP

    2. test at the same VIN/VOUT/LOAD at following condition:

        a. Vin 5V/Vout 1.5v/load 0.5A; DCM

        b. Vin 5V/Vout 1.5v/load 5A; CCM

change EVM MODE J1 connection from DE mode to HEF mode, there is no frequency or switching waveform change both condition.

So I want to know the specific difference between DE and HEF mode ?

    Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Mia Ma

  • Hello Mia,

To my understanding, difference between DE and HEF mode is regarding the use of PWM modulator.

You can see in figure 8 to 12, that this difference is more intended for higher switching frequency.

In order to save on switching losses, HEF adapts switching frequency operation to guarantee best efficiency.

PWM modulator adapts on time of High-side MOSFET to get optimized efficiency.

At lower switching frequency, DE and HEF are very similar.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks a lot!

    Regards,
    Dorian
