LM36011: Can LM36011 be paralleled to get higher current?

Part Number: LM36011
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3644

Hello Sir,

I have a question about LM36011 LED driver. My application requires 2.5A current in external strobe mode. Can I use two LM36011 drivers in parallel, since the maximum current for single LM36011 is 1.5A?

Thanks

Claire

  • Hi Claire,

For higher current up to 2.5A, we would recommend with two-channel device-LM3644, for LM3644 you can combine to channels together to driver higher output current.

For LM36011, if you want to combine two channels together, it is ok, but there is some delay for each device that may also bring some risk. So we would highly recommend with LM3644.

  • Hello Sean,

Thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunately I can't not use LM3644 since it is a boost converter which requires an external inductor, so LM36011 works better for my application, which has a 5V DC input.

Can you please elaborate what do you mean by risk caused by delay? I was planning to set both LM36011 in external strobe mode and use same strobe signal, is there going to be a delay between the drivers?

    Thank you

    Claire

  • Hi Claire,

LM3644 can works under Pass mode like LM36011 without the inductor. So don't worry about this, there is no limitation for LM3644. Many users has used LM3644 for higher output current application.

For LM36011, even you have configured with an external strobe function, but each difference may have some variation for the internal circuit which means the output current may have a small variation.

  • Hi Sean,

Thank you again for your information. I see there is an application note about using LM3644 in an inductorless application, which is very helpful.

Just want to confirm, for LM3644, LED1 and LED2 pins can be connected together, so it can deliver up to 3A in flash/strobe mode.

Thank you for your help again.

  • Hi Claire,

Yes, each channel can drive up to 1.5A and you can combine together to driver higher output current.
