TPS61042: CTRL pin termination

Part Number: TPS61042
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61043

Hi team,

My customer will use TPS61043 for their product but the device was broken because of their following mistake.

  •  CTRL pin was open
  • Diode(between SW and COUT) direction was opposite

Then, the customer provided some questions as follows.

  1. Datasheet page10 says "This CTRL pin must be terminated".
What if it's not terminated?(What is failure mode?)
  2. What if diode direction is opposite(How does it damage device)?
Is there over voltage on SW pin by inductor when SW becomes OFF from ON since there is no current path when it's OFF?

Best regards,

Shota Mago

  • Hi,

CTRL pin is open drain structure and it must be connected to a certain  voltage level.

If there is no current path during FET is off, the energy storaged in inductor cannot be released, and inductor will saturated and current becomes too large to destroy the device.
