UCC28730-Q1: Could we use this device as a HV boost controller?

Part Number: UCC28730-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28730, UC1842

Hi team,

Could we use UCC27830-Q1 as a HV boost controller non-isolated boost controller?

I would like to design 110~200V input and 400~500V output system with boost controller and external MOSFET. If UCC28730-Q1 is not suitable for boost controller, could you tell me which TI solution is available for this system? Drive current is enough to be the same one as UCC28730-Q1

Regards,
Ochi

  • Hello Yoshiki-san,

Unfortunately, the UCC28730 flyback controller cannot be used as a non-isolated boost controller.
The reason is because this device uses primary-side regulation (PSR) which requires a reflection of the output voltage to an auxiliary winding to be sensed at the VS pin.  The boost inductor can have an Aux winding on it, but it reflects Vout-VIn, not simply Vout.  .

I searched for a reference design for a boost with you parameters, but could not find one, even with wider parameters.

I suggest that a general-purpose controller such as UCC280x (or any derivative of the original UC1842 series) can be configured into a non-isolated boost converter.

    Regards,
    Ulrich
