UCC27288: Benefit of using half-bridge driver with external bootstrap diode

Part Number: UCC27288

Hello team, I’ve got a question from the customer, and would like to ask your advice.

What would be the benefit for the customers to use half-bridge driver with external bootstrap diode (like UCC27288) ?

Would the external bootstrap diode increase the total footprint?

Is it about to be able to choose which diode to be used, so the designer can have more flexibility?

Best regards,

Kurumi Hasegawa

  • Hello Kurumi,

Thank you for supporting the UCC27288. There are a couple of application conditions where it is beneficial to be able to use an external boot diode. In low frequency applications, such as motor drive, there is a need for a large value boot strap capacitance, external boot diodes allow flexibility to use a part that has higher current/time capacity.

Also there is a case in some higher frequency applications with high Qg Mosfets where the average current required to drive the Mosfet Qg exceeds the capability of the internal boot diode.

The external boot diode will add some space to the total footprint, but diodes are available in small packages. The advantage is about flexibility in choosing the external boot diode rating.

Confirm if this answers your question, or you can post additional questions on this thread.

  • Hello Richard,

Thank you so much for the information!

I understand the benefits of using external diode now, and I will convey it to the customers.
