BQ24130: Charging to supercapacitors

Hello E2E,

Our customer plans to charge three supercapacitors in series with the BQ24130.

1; Is this usage appropriate?
2; What concerns does TI anticipate?
3; What balancing circuit (or device) can you propose for charging three supercapacitors in series?

Best regards,
ACGUY

  • ACGUY,

    1. This is an appropriate usage for this device

    2. You can mostly follow Figure 2. Typical Super Capacitor Charging Application Schematic from the datasheet, but please be aware R12 will need to change for your 3S application. Assuming 2.7/cell for a supercapacitor, R12 should be 196kohm.

    3. The battery chargers team does not offer any chargers with integrated cell balancing for super capacitor charging, you will need an external solution like one shown in the application report below. This application report is pretty old, so I would suggest making a follow up post with the appropriate team to see if they have newer solutions available.

I hope this resolves your issue,

    Ricardo

  • ACGUY,

Actually I have found a better resource for super capacitor cell balancing. Take a look at the application report below and consider the BQ33100 for your cell balancing needs.

    Best Regards,
