TPL7407L: TPL7407L : external Schottky diode rating

Part Number: TPL7407L
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , ULN2003A

Hello ,

I am currently using TPL7407L IC for driving leach relay of 28V coil current is ~0.5A . My device is keep failing after multiple use , i understand that i have selected wrong external schottky diode , please guide me from where i can select required shortkky diode , i am attaching my sch below .

Please comment on it .

Thank you

Diode on pin 10 is connected between pin 9 GND_F externally . Diode PN : PMEG4005AESFYL

  • Hi Gaurav,

Your picture has not uploaded correctly and I am not sure if the issue you are facing is due to the negative transient. The Schottky has to have as low a forward voltage as possible.

If possible, can you please use the TPL7407LA instead of TPL7407L?

This is a pin-to-pin replacement of the TPL7407L with more robust operation and it does not need a Schottky diode for negative transient handling on the output pins.

  • Sure will try that .Any ways thank you for prompt reply .

    TPL7407LA

    Hello Shreyas ,

I was going through the datasheet of TPL7407LA , The max supply voltage is 30V & TPL7407L is 40V , can you please recommend  alternate of TPL7404L such that it is pin to pin equivalent .

    Gaurav

  • Hi Gaurav,

We do not have a similarly rated device. The improved variant of TPL7407LA is only upto 30V. In your application (28V), there is less headroom but it might still be possible to use this device here.

  • Hello ,

we have shortlisted ULN2003BPWR  as pin to pin replacement although technology & internal architecture is different , we feel it is best suit for TPL7407L . Please comment .

    Thank you.

  • Hi Gaurav,

ULN2003A has the same pinout but due to it's BJT implementation, it is not equivalent in performance but rather only functionally equivalent.

Another item to note is that, ULN2003A does not require an external Schottky on OUT7 in the case of inductive loads.

If your application can use a BJT implementation, please go ahead and try ULN2003A as it is a p2p swap.
