LM185QML: Maximum ratings data

Part Number: LM185QML

Customer conducting derating analysis for long term reliability, based on maximum ratings. Device is LM185BWG/883.

1. On datasheet, page one states that it can provide an output up to 5.3V. However, it is not stated anywhere in the “Absolute Maximum Ratings” section.

2. Please clarify what is the maximum voltage than an LM185 can provide, i.e. the total of the R1/R2 resistive divider in standard voltage reference configuration, before it risks performance degradation or damage?

3. We are in some instances using it to provide 5.0 output. Are there any concerns for long term accuracy, stability or failure at this condition?

4. A terminology question relating to derating standard ECSS-Q-ST-30-11C: is it correct to describe the LM185QML as a “(shunt) voltage regulator”?

    I can help you with this.

    1/2. That is correct. Please use 5.3V as the maximum since there is no characterization beyond that value in the EC table.

    3. There is no concern as it is operating within the recommended operating conditions.

    4. That is correct the LM185 is a shunt voltage regulator.

  • Adding on questions,

    On page 2 of datasheet, it shows a 6.3V Zener surely for protection.

    If 5.3V is the maximum, what happens between 5.3 and 6.3V ?

    We do not have a datasheet ABS max value. 5.3V is a good value to use for ABS max since the datasheet implies that it is the maximum value it should be biased at. Due to the age of the device, we do not have information on the stresses the device will experience between 5.3V and 6.3V voltage region.
