NiMH 3S2P System - Using bq34Z100-G1 with bq24401

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100-G1, BQ24401, BQ2014, BQ2004, BQ27532-G1, BQ2973, BQ24250, BQ2014H

I'm currently designing a NiMH battery system. The system would have two 3S packs connected in parallel (3S2P). Ideally I would like have a protection, gas gauging and charging features all incorporated.

For the charger I'm considering the bq24401. Unfortunately, there are not many gas gauge IC for NiMH chemistry. The only one I was able to found trough the TI page was the bq34Z100-G1. My question is, can this two IC can work together?

I did some additional research and found the bq2004 (charger) and the companion bq2014 (gas gauge), even though this two seem to work great together and they apear active in the page, I was not able to find them trough the Battery Management search function. Are this two still available? Are they recommended for my application?

Finally I was wondering is there any protection IC for NiMH in the Texas Instruments catalog.

As a reference I would love to get something similar to combining the bq24250, the bq27532-G1 and the bq2973 in a Lithium Ion system, but for a NiMH chemistry. Is this an option?

Thanks beforehand.

  • The bq34z100-G1 should work with the bq24401 charger. They do not communicate with one another, but the gauge should detect charge termination after the delta criteria have been met. You can still use the bq2014H device, although applications support for this device is limited. We do not have any cell monitoring and protection solutions to support NiMH.
