LM5117-Q1: Can we use these TVS diodes without damaging the device?

Part Number: LM5117-Q1

Hi team,

My customer has designed in the LM5117-Q1 for the input to their power distribtion. They have had their customer ask to increase the operating input voltage to 60V. For this reason they are thinking about using one of the two TVS diodes:

-P6SMB68A

-SMBJ54D-M3

Both of these parts have a breakdown voltage of 60V, however the max clamping voltage is ~85V, which far exceeds the abs max of 75V.

Just checking to make sure, this is definitely non-negotiable, right? Not even a tiny transient should go past the absmax?

Thanks,

Brian

  • I would agree with your statement that the Abs max is non-negotiable.

In practice a small spike of say 5V above Abs max in the 10-100ns range may be OK.

However, TI would not be able to ensure that the device will survive; so the Abs max spec must stand.
