UCC28056: question about totem pole

Part Number: UCC28056
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC25600, UCC27714, UCC28063

Dear TI,

I'm a beginner of HVP products, and one of my customer asked about the peripheral circuits of TI's UCC28056.

* Content of inquiry: Applicable to Totem Pole Circuit. (want to Deletion)

  -. Is it necessary?
-. What are the specs prescribed by the IC, and what are the requirements to satisfy? - Please explain in the judgment section.
-. Please share this IC's information with the totme pole, if you have any other such review result.

Please let me know if you need any additional information about the above questions.

thanks,

TS

  • Hi TS Yang,

Thanks for your interest in UCC28056. I am not quite sure what is the totem pole circuit your customer is referring to. There isn't a totem pole on the MOSFET gate drive. UCC28056 is not applicable to totem pole PFC topology. Would you be able to identify which components on this schematic your customer is referring to as "totem pole"?

    Best Regards,

    Ben Lough

  • Hi Ben Lough,

First of all, I confused the TI part number.

They are not UCC28056, but SN1108052 and UCC25600.

So if I need to write a new post because the part is different, please let me know.

Below is our customer's schematic with totem pole circuit.

  • Hi TS Yang,

Thank you for the clarification. If your customer is planning to use a gate drive transformer, I would recommend keeping the totem pole circuit that is on the gate drive pins of UCC25600. One option is to use an external half bridge driver such as UCC27714. The customer would not need the totem pole or the gate drive transformer in this configuration. For reference, please take a look at reference design TIDA-0355:.

  • Hi Ben Lough,

    thanks for your quick answer.

    1. LLC - UCC25600
    Totem pole circuit
Our customer requests a more detailed description for your recommendation to keep the totem pole circut regarding to a gate drive transformer (actually they plan to use gate drive transformer and want to delete totem pole circuit).
And if you have any material about this, please share for us.

    2. PFC - UCC28063 (SN1108052)
    Totem pole circuit
Customer also use SN1108052 which is customized part number of UCC28063. Please check the totem pole circuit of this device. Absolutely, customer is willing to remove this circuit too.

    thanks,
    TS
  • Hi TS Yang,

UCC25600: You can eliminate the totem pole circuit on the gate drive outputs but be cognizant of the rise and fall time of the internal gate drive and make sure it is acceptable to the customer (see page 7 of the UCC25600 datasheet). .Also consider added DC blocking capacitor on the primary side of the gate transformer to prevent transformer saturation during fast transients.

SN1108052: removing the totem pole circuits will cause the gate transitions to be slower. This could be ok but depends on the gate charge of the MOSFETs in the PFC stage.

    Best Regards,
    Ben Lough
