ISO5852S: Active Miller clamp

Part Number: ISO5852S
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00195

If bipolar supply is provided (+15V to pin no. 5 and -8V to pin 1 wrt pin 3 gnd2) then what should be the status of Miller Clamp pin(pin 7) .i.e whether it should be grounded or kept open?

  • Hi Archit,

Welcome to e2e, and thanks for your interest in our products!

Figure 50 shows the ISO5852S configured in a bipolar supply configuration. It shows pin 7 left floating. The issue is the CLAMP pin monitors the voltage on the gate, and if it's above 2V (fixed value, not adjustable), then it tries to turn the gate off. Since you're using a bipolar supply, you would really want this 2V value to be closer to your -8V to act as a Miller clamp. However, there is no way to adjust the reference, so we just leave it floating in this case.

  • hi.

In bi-polar configuration, do we need to leave the clamp (pin 7) floating or no connection ?

in TIDA-00195, the circuit uses bi-polar supply and also clamp input is used with ISO5852S.

could you please confirm the status of clamp input pin in bi-polar power supply configuration.
  • Hi Rajasekaran,

In a bi-polar supply configuration you can either connect the clamp to the gate or leave it floating. The Miller Clamp pin helps more in a unipolar supply scenario by preventing a Miller current induced turn-on by bypassing any gate resistance to pull the gate low. Since you are using a bipolar supply (-8V), connecting the clamp may not make a large difference in the performance. So it is up to you to leave the pin floating or to connect it to the gate, but both options are acceptable.
