TPS54201: Calculating Efficiency

Part Number: TPS54201

Dear team,

Hello, i am trying to understand the concept of this chip but having trouble with calculting the efficiency of the whole schematic.

My input is 12.8~14.4V/3.3A(4*LFP cells) and target to output 3.3V/1.5A to light one LED(3.3V/1.5A).

I have attached my schematic but as i calculate the efficiency itself using equation for linear regulator, its about 11%. But as this is switiching regulator, I am quite ambiguous about how i should calculate the output voltage. As i see the webench, it performs more than 80 percent of efficiency. Can you guys explain this to me if possible?

Thank you!

  • Hi Ray,

For the switching converter, it is not easy to calculate efficiency. You need to know the internal power loss(device power loss, switching power loss and conduction loss) and power loss on the inductor.

You can request a TPS54201EVM to test the efficiency with a detail application.
