BQ24610: BQ24610 + PD IC + display battery level.

Part Number: BQ24610
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987, BQ40Z80, TPS65987D, BQ25713

Hi,

My customer need the battery charger for 5cells*2parallel / 10Ah / 0.25C, I recommended the  BQ24610+TPS65987,

but they need two ways input (USB Type-C 20V PD and AC adaptor 24V) for the battery charger, also need display battery level.

Did TI has any solution? Thanks.

Regards

Rock

  • Hi Rock,

If they are using a 20V USB C PD input, do they need to be able to do the CC line negotiation? If so BQ24610 does not have integrated PD detection, and you would need a PD controller to handle the negotiation. Is there a preference for the adapter when both input sources are connected, or will only one be connected at a time?

With regards to battery level display, integrating a gauge to determine SoC of battery would be best option, as this part does not have internal ADC.

We do not have a reference design/solution for this.

  • Hi Kedar Manishankar,

If the customer needs 2-ways power (USB Type-C 20V PD and AC adaptor 24V) for the battery charger and displays the battery level.

Are the TPS65987D+BQ24610+ BQ40z80 can meet that? Did you has any reference design? Thanks.

    Regards,

    Rock

  • Hi Rock,

Currently we do not have reference design. Generally a standalone charger is not used with a PD controller, as the benefit of TPS65987D is that it has an I2C bus, through which the host can control the settings of an I2C charger.

However if the PD controller is just used to get the 20V negotiation, then BQ24610 can be used. You will have to check with the PD team, if that is the best design. They should have more information on how to do the diode ORing of the input. BQ25713 is a common part to be used with PD controller but design is more complicated than with BQ24610.
