MC33063A: MC33063A max output Current rating

Part Number: MC33063A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM53603

Greetings,

I wanted to use MC33063A IC for bucking from 40V to 4V. The datasheet says "Switch Current Up to 1.5 A". My application would be to use this output to power up a few sensors, a microcontroller which combining would contribute to around 0.5A load. Along with that I would like to use SIM808 for Data Transmission which says "the peak current is nearly 2A for 577uS". The continuous current consumption of SIM808 is around 150mA.

Is it safe to use IC MC33063A for this application?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Akhil,

Thanks for reaching out with your question and for considering the MC33063A in your design.

Based on your specifications I don't think that the MC33063A is going to be the best choice for your application. I think something like the LM53603 might be a good solution.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Garrett
