BQ27421-G1A auto shutdown

Hi,

We are observing a very weird behavior of BQ27421-G1A fuel gauge. Our battery operated device was working fine normally and fuel gauge was giving correct battery level. But after some time it starts giving '00' as battery level. When this issue occurs we tried to read some other registers like FLAGS and CONTROL STATUS, but it returns '00' for both the registers too.

Even we tried to measure LDO output voltage, which should be 1.8V normally, but that was 0V when this issue occurs. After debugging it seems that Fuel Gauge goes to Shutdown mode. We have observed this issue in 20 devices out of 100 devices.

The Fuel Gauge is connected to SOC over I2C and the we are not sending I2C commands to shutdown the fuel gauge.

So we are not able to understand, how it goes to Shutdown automatically?

Appreciate your quick reply.

Thanks,

Dhaval

  • Hi Dhaval,
I believe we are already addressing this issue offline. However, a work around will be to toggle your gpout pin using your host uC. This will wake the device up from that shut down mode.
You will need to check to make sure that no electrical overstress caused the device to get into that mode. Also check to make sure your decoupling caps to the chip are properly connected and that there is no noise on Bat pin.

    thanks

  • Hello Onyx,

What was the resolution to the original poster's issue. We are experiencing the same issue on our product.

If the only resolution was to toggle the GPOUT pin, then that is fine, but we would like to know now, since we will to make a costly modification to product that is already in the field.
