TMDSICE3359: Profibus, Profinet & Ethercat software stack related question

Part Number: TMDSICE3359
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PROFIBUS, , TMDS64EVM, TMDS243EVM

Hi,

In our new project, we require a Profibus master, Profinet, and EtherCAT. For this purpose, we have selected the part no TMDSICE3359 . However, we have some doubts regarding whether this part number meets the specific requirements for Profibus master, Profinet, and EtherCAT support. If it does not meet these requirements, could you please suggest an alternative?

  1. Does this communication engine have an inbuilt Profibus master, Profinet, and EtherCAT software stack, or do we need to purchase the stack separately from the OEM?

  2. Does this communication engine support Windows IoT Enterprise?

  3. What is the product life cycle?

  4. We need to integrate this communication card into an industrial PC. How can we accomplish this integration?
  • Hi ,

    Thanks for your query.

If this is  a new project related to Industrial Communication, we will highly recommend you to use TMDS64EVM or https://www.ti.com/tool/TMDS243EVM.

    Assuming this RTOS based development.

  • Hi Ashwani Goel,

I have reviewed the datasheets for the TMDS64EVM and TMDS243EVM. These evaluation boards do not meet our specifications (PROFIBUS, PROFINET, ETHERCAT), and the form factor of these cards is larger compared to the TMDSICE3359. Could you please share information on industrial communication boards that meet the specifications of the TMDSICE3359?

  • Hi Remesh,

#1: For AM335, you will need to work with a 3rd party to secure the Industrial communications stack.  I would start with TMG (https://www.tmgte.de/en/)

#2: I am not sure but I suspect there are no special hardware requirements to support Windows IoT Enterprise; I will check with our networking expert once he is back from vacation. (It's spring break in the US).

#3:  Typical industrial life cycles are 15 to 20+ years; AM335 is a very popular part and we are moving production to a TI internal facility and I see no concerns over long term supply.

#4: This will depend on a number of variables, but in general we see customers connect via Ethernet

The only other options for Slave protocol support would be the AM243x or AM64x and mentioned earlier. There are device options that come with pre-certified industrial stacks (EtherCAT, PROFINET RT/IRT, EtherNET IP, and I/O Link).  You would need to work with a 3rd party like TMG to get support for ProifBus.  The TI software team is also working on adding additional protocol support to the AM243x and AM64x, so we may at a later date add ProfiBus support.
