SK-AM64B: Cannot boot via Ethernet as backup boot mode.

Part Number: SK-AM64B

Tool/software:

Hello everybody,

we cannot make the system boot via Ethernet Backup Boot Mode.

We put bootmode pins as in figure, selecting SD card as primary mode and ethernet as backup mode configured with RGMII with internal Tx delay. We left the SD card tray empty and powered on.

We monitored the traffic but we could only see some LLDP packet, without any BOOTP request, as shown below.

Setting Ethernet RGMII as primary boot mode, instead, seems to work fine with the configuration in the figure below.

In this condition we can see the BOOTP request and the TFTP image transfer from our host to the SK-AM64B board, and the U-boot prompt on the console.

How can we make the backup ethenet boot working?

BR,
Federico

  • Hi Federico,

We monitored the traffic but we could only see some LLDP packet, without any BOOTP request, as shown below.

To confirm, the mac address showing from these LLDP packets are not TI MAC addresses.

Please allow us a day or two to try to reproduce your test case.

  • Update:

I have reproduced the same issue on my setup

    1. Test Ethernet primary boot with SD as backup with the same boot switch configuration you shared

This works as expected as you indicated

    2. Test Ethernet as backup boot with SD as primary with the same boot switch configuration you shared

This does not work with no packets showing up on Wireshark.

    Additional observations

    1. Ethernet boot as primary bootmode only works when the link info bit (bit 7) is set. If not set, Ethernet boot still fails (Wireshark also shows no packets)

    2. Ethernet boot as secondary bootmode does not appear to have a link info bit configuration

I believe there may be something related to this link info bit configuration that may be at fault. I'm trying to get more details about this with the developer.

If I don't respond by early next week please ping this thread again

  • Hello Daolin

To confirm, the mac address showing from these LLDP packets are not TI MAC addresses.

I see those LLDP packets with Ethernet primary boot, too. I won't look into this at the moment.

    Additional observations

    1. Ethernet boot as primary bootmode only works when the link info bit (bit 7) is set. If not set, Ethernet boot still fails (Wireshark also shows no packets)

Yes, the Ethernet boot configuration in the pic is the only one working, for me. RMII doesn't work either.

  • Hi Federico,

I'm still looking into this with the internal team, I have created an internal bug ticket on this issue. I will be out of office Tues-Thurs so please expect a delayed response on an update Friday or early next week.

  • Hello Federico,

Thank you for your patience while I was out of office.

Our development team has informed me that Ethernet boot as backup/secondary boot has not been verified to be supported internally. I'm currently waiting for a response from our ROM expert on the link info bit and Ethernet boot as secondary boot and if this is supported by the ROM.
