DM8168 Video Capture from FPGA[no tvp7002] Problem. VPSS_FVID2: contrl event 0x10040018 timeout

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVP7002

Hi,

I want to capture video source from FPGA using VIN0.

There is no TVP7002 chip on our custom board,

and I got an error like below when linux booting up on my custom board.

>VPSS_FVID2: contrl event 0x6 timeout

>ti81xxfb ti81xxfb: failed to stop.
>VPSS_FVID2: contrl event 0x6 timeout
>ti81xxfb ti81xxfb: failed to stop.
>dm816x-evm login: VPSS_FVID2: contrl event 0x10040018 timeout
>VPSS_DCTRL: failed to get node input status
>VPSS_GRPX : failed to set grpx0 nodes
>VPSS_FVID2: contrl event 0x10040018 timeout
>VPSS_DCTRL: failed to get node input status
>VPSS_GRPX : failed to set grpx0 nodes
or
 >>contrl event 0x10040018 timeout
>>VPSS_DCTRL: failed to get node input status
>>VPSS_GRPX : failed to set grpx0 nodes
>>ti81xxfb ti81xxfb: fvid2 create failed
Linux can work, but there is no output from HDMI port.
And when I use loggerSMDump to check the VPSS,
I found an error when Device Init.
I update my ezsdk from EZSDK_5_02_02_60 to EZSDK 5_03_01_15.
 Error still exists.
Here is the message when linux booting up and demsg log. ( EZSDK 5_03_01_15. run level 3, using /dm816x_hdvpss_v4l2.xem3 instead of /dm816x_hdvpss.xem3)

Can anyone give me some advice about this?

  • Lei,

Could you tell which PSP version was used here?

    Regards,

    yihe

  • Hi yihe

     Thank you for your reply.

I am using psp04.00.00.12, and the EZSDK is ezsdk_dm816x-evm_5_02_02_60.

I havn't modified anything about u-boot ,linux also modules.

On evm board all software works fine, but not work on our custom board.

We want to get video source from FPGA, so there is no tvp7002 on custom board,

I don't know if this is the reason about this problem

    Regards,

    Lei

  • In your log, there was an error reported:

    N:VPSS P:2 #:00007 T:00000000|7a20409d S:Error in Vps_platformDeviceInit retVal: -1

Due to this error, M3 firmware was not loading completed, so when A8 tried to talk to M3, it got timeout.

Are you using the dm816x_hdvpss.xem3(M3 firmware) from SDK?  That M3 firmware has some i2c related calls on tvp7002. Since your board does not have such devices,  M3 reports error.

Could you try to use  the ti816x_hdvpss.xem3 from the PSP and following vpss video user guide? the ti816x_hdvpss.xem3 does not have i2c call from M3, so you should not face this issue.

the ti816x_hdvpss.xme3 can be downloaded from http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/psp/LinuxPSP/DM816x_04_00/04_00_00_12/index_FDS.html

  • Hi yihe,

I download DM816x HDVPSS binary package, and got  ti816x_hdvpss.xem3 from it. But still not work.

I don't quite clear how to load it into system, and I did it like this.

First, I copied  ti816x_hdvpss.xem3 to /usr/share/ti/ti-media-controller-utils on the board.

and copied slaveloader to /usr/bin (There is no slaveloader on my board)

    and then I modified /etc/rc.5/S15load-hdvpss-firmware.sh

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    23: firmware_loader $HDVPSS_ID /usr/share/ti/ti-media-controller-utils/dm816x_hdvpss.xem3 start

    changed into

    23: slaveloader startup VPSS-M3  /usr/share/ti/ti-media-controller-utils/ti816x_hdvpss.xem3

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then I changed the bootargs into  notifyk.vpssm3_sva=0xA0000000

    and try to load ti8168_hdvpss.xem3.

I got some error like this

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    dm816x-evm login:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the PSP vpss video user guide, it said

    • TI816X PSP 04.00.00.12 release
    • Syslink_02_00_00_73_eng release (slaverloader)
    • HDVPSS 01.00.01.27 release
Note: Only the above mentioned version of the components are verified and tested.

But the syslink in ezsdk_dm816x-evm_5_02_02_60 is syslink_2_00_02_80.
I don't know if this is the reason.

If so, how can I get ti8168_hdvpss for my syslink version?

    Regards,
    Lei
  • Hi,

Can you please follow below steps to make fbdev work first. Then you can try making it work with the ezsdk versions of components.

    1. Download kernel source from the software download page.

    2. Download all t he HDVPSS binaries present on same page.

    3. Define notifyk.vpssm3_sva=0xA0000000 as a part of bootargs

    4. insmod syslink.ko
    5. ./slaveloader startup VPSS-M3 ti816x_hdvpss.xem3
    6. insmod vpss.ko
    7. insmod ti81xxfb.ko vram=0:40M,1:1M,2:1M
    8. insmod ti81xxhdmi.ko

    Regards,

    Hardik Shah

  • Follow what Hardik said, as for the syslink version, PSP does provide the prebuilt syslink.ko and slaverloader. It is in the same package as ti816x_hdvpss.xem3.

    Regards,

    yihe

  • Thank you Hardik Shah,

You mean I should download the whole TI816X-LINUX-PSP-04.00.00.12.tgz package,

    and HDVPSS files,

Then I should make a new uImage and modules using the new PSP package,

and boot my board using these new files.

After that, I should change the uboot args and boot the board,

    insmod on the board.

    Am I right?

    Regards,

    Lei

  • Hi,

You should download all the deliverables of the PSP for the particular release you want to try FBDEV.  All the PSP releases deliverables are at below location for all releases.

    PSP04_00 @ http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_tii/psp/LinuxPSP/DM816x_04_00/index.html

    PSP04_01 @ http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_tii/psp/LinuxPSP/DM814x_04_01/index.html

You should download TI816X-LINUX-PSP-04.00.00.12.tgz as well as HDVPSS binaries for that release.

    Regards,

    Hardik Shah

  • Dear Hardik,

I am a colleague of  Wang Lei. I tried to follow the instruction you showed as

But, in 4. we met an error as

. Do you have any idea on what is wrong in my instruction ?

    Thanks,

  • Hi,

You need to compile syslink with the version of Kernel you are trying to insert syslink. Basically error is that your syslink.ko is compiled with some version of kernel which is not same as what version of kernel you have loaded.

In short compile syslink.ko against same kernel you are booting with.

    Regards,

    Hardik Shah

  • Dear Hardik,

    Thanks for you reply.

Do you mean the precompile object, syslink.ko, is not valied for the new build kernel?

Could you let me know more details how to compile the syslink.ko ?

Basic procedure, such as make modules, seems not to produce the object, syslink.ko.

    Thanks in advence,

    Toshiyuki Fukushige

  • Hi,

You should use same kernel version for which you have downloaded binaries. Else results will be un-expected. For which kernel version you are trying to use binaries. Can you please point me to binary and kernel download page.

Syslink build method is explained here http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/SysLink_Install_Guide

    Regards,

    Hardik Shah

  • Dear Hardik

I downloaded the kernel source and the precompiled version of syslink.ko from

    http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/psp/LinuxPSP/DM816x_04_00/04_00_00_12/index_FDS.html

Again, do you mean the precompiled version of syslink.ko is not valid for the rebuild kernel, and we should recompile the syslink.ko ?

If so, again, could you let me know how to make syslink.ko in more actual form ? Your suggestion is too vague for me.

    Thanks,

    Toshiyuki Fukushige

  • Hi,

If you are recompiling the kernel with any changes you need to re-compile syslink.ko.  From error it seems that kernel is modified thats why syslink.ko is not getting inserted. Can you please re-compile syslink as described in Syslink install guide.

    Regards,

    Hardik Shah

  • Dear Hardik,

Thanks. I simply built the kernel from the downloaded tar ball with NO change.

Again, please let me ask the same questions:

Should I not use the precompiled syslink.ko in the DM816x HDVPSS binary package at http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_tii/psp/LinuxPSP/DM816x_04_00/04_00_00_12/index_FDS.html  ?

And then, should I use a newly re-compiled syslink.ko instead of the precompiled one ?

    Thanks,

    Toshiyuki Fukushige

  • Hi,

In most of the cases pre-compile .ko should work. But from your logs it looks like you need to re-compile it. Can you just re-compile it and try.

    Regards,

    Hardik Shah

    1. Download kernel source from the software download page.

    2. Download all t he HDVPSS binaries present on same page.

    3. Define notifyk.vpssm3_sva=0xA0000000 as a part of bootargs

    4. insmod syslink.ko
    5. ./slaveloader startup VPSS-M3 ti816x_hdvpss.xem3

    7. insmod ti81xxfb.ko vram=0:40M,1:1M,2:1M
    8. insmod ti81xxhdmi.ko

I did these steps as you said.

There was no error when insmod,

but when I run my test program (Capture test program with OMX, which was fine on EVM )

      I got error below.

  • Lei,

When using ti816x_hdvpss.xem3, you can not use any OMX component SW since the ti816x_hdvpss.xme3 does not support OMX.

Do you expect special features from OMX?

    Regards,

    yih

  • hi yihe,

we want capture images from FPGA using openMax.

     Like this thread http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/717/t/151166.aspx.

On our custom board, we use FPGA as video source for VIP0, also there is no TVP7002 on our board.

I have tested the OMX program on DM8168 EVM board, so now I want to make it work on our custom board.

But it seems Vpss failed at device Init.

    N:VPSS P:2 #:00007 T:00000000|7a20409d S:Error in Vps_platformDeviceInit retVal: -1

    Regards,

  • Lei,

The ti814x_hdvpss_1G.xme3 is pure M3 firmware and it does not support OMX.

For your case, the SDK 5.03, it releases a new M3 firmware dm814x_hdvpss_v4l2.xem3, which has the OMX support + no TVP7002 support.

    Regards,

    yihe

    Thank you yihe.

But I am using TI8168 not TI8148, is that also suitable for my case?

    Regards,

    Lei

  • In that case you should be using dm816x_hdvpss_v4l2.xem3

    Regards,

    Hardik Shah

  • Hi Hardik Shah

I will try it using EZSDK 5.03.

I am not sure if I descripted my problem clearly, so I post my problem again in this thread

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/717/t/151166.aspx#570941

If it's possible, can you tell me more about what should I do?

and I will post the results under 5.03 later.

    Regards,

    Lei

  • Dear Hardik Shah and yihe,

I have tried with dm816x_hdvpss_v4l2.xem3 in EZSDK 5.03.01.15。Error still exists.

I change run level from 5 to 3. (Linux will crash sometimes when the run level is 5)

and I changed the S01load-hd-firmware.sh file in /etc/rc3.d

    Is there anything wrong?

I want to check the hardware status using such as registers, is there any sample about that?

    Thank you.

    Regards,
