Hello there,

we are trying to bring-up SPI on custom Linux with J784S4XEVM board.

Could you please also share J784S4EVM board schematics as for SPI port connections J26 is the SPI port but we need all pin details for SPI port?

could you please share the steps to do it or documentation where things are given ?

    What is the OS being used here? Are you looking for RTOS example or Linux. Looking into SDK documentation might be a helpful starting point.

    SPI port we want to access in Linux OS

    looked at few examples in SDK documents but we just want to use simple SPI out at a given pin but we have not got clear clarity which port pin will work as SPI required pins

    But we want similar for J784S4XEVM TDA4AP-Q1, TDA4VP-Q1, TDA4AH-Q1 and TDA4VH-Q1 board.

    could you please check Internally and confirm ?

    Can these changes be applied to J784S4 EVM board ?

    Where are the SPI physical PIN connections on J784s4 EVM Board ?

    Could you please share PIN number and connection references ?

  • Hi Mohan,

    The process would be similar for j784s4.

    You should use SPI5 for testing with j784s4 EVM. The SPI5 pins are brought out on header J26 on board.

    I haven't checked it.

    I can check it but it will me some time to test this and get back to you. It will be at least Monday next week.

    Could you please post the full logs from dmesg? As Tanmay mentioned, the FAQ for TDA4VM should be applicable to J784S4. Although, I am now remembering there is one additional step.

    As for some context:

    There just happens to be a separate engineer working on enabling spi5 on the EVM:  J784S4XEVM: Device tree of main_spi5 on J26, but in /dev can not find the spidev** 

    Same issue could be happening (aka, spidev compatible field in-use), or a different issue. And as a potential different issue specific to the J784S4 EVM board, there is a GPIO mux that muxes the SPI5 connection between header to SoC that may need changes.

    The engineer in the other thread has defined these correctly. In addition to the dts changes, there is an additional DIP SW2.2 that on the EVM that should be set to high.

    Bottomline, I can review the logs from dmesg if they are provided, and based on the logs, we can suggest next steps.

    I am currently on break, so any development work will be delayed from my end. 

    But to give quick input, I do not see any SPI related logs in the shared dmesg logs. Please reference the other E2E forum thread I have linked in my previous response to enable SPI. They have shared a patch that is currently being debugged, but it has most of the needed changes.

    Can you make sure the patch is applied?

    You can put a printk statement in the probe function of the spidev driver to see if the driver is getting probed. Any printk debug logs should show up in dmesg.

    I think we are pretty close and the issue is simple. I suspect the image was not built correctly and/or flashed correctly from the following line in the logs:

    Expected output will have the date of the PC used to build the kernel. As an example of a SD card with something I just flashed with an image I built a few minutes ago:

    Otherwise, the diff looks like it has all the necessary changes in SPI driver and devicetree. I did not look too deeply into the config file changes, but it looks good from a quick glance.

    Just to confirm 

    We are replacing the kernel image after mounting already flashed sd card 

    sudo cp arch/arm64/boot/Image /media/rootfs/boot

    sudo cp arch/arm64/boot/dts/ti/k3-j784s4.dtb /media/rootfd/boot

    Could you please confirm above process is correct or not ?

    Or do we have to create full SDK build and and full SDcard again

    That should be correct for the kernel Image. The devicetree, I think there is another folder within the boot directory for the newer SDKs called rootfs/boot/dtb/ti. If you are following this documentation, then there is a documentation bug which I will file: https://software-dl.ti.com/jacinto7/esd/processor-sdk-linux-j721s2/11_00_00_08/exports/docs/linux/Foundational_Components_Kernel_Users_Guide.html#installing-the-kernel

    Otherwise, the kernel Image should have been updated correctly. So please make sure that the kernel was built successfully without any errors. 

    Could you please share patch for AM69SK ?

    We do not have a patch for AM69SK. Please reference the J784S4 patch to create the necessary dts changes.
