V4L2 Capture - Use the Patches?

Hardik has been documenting and explaining the recent addition of V4L2 capture support. He points to PSP 04.00.01.13 and PSP 04.01.00.07, depending on platform, with instructions for their installation and use. Turning to the release notes for the 04.01.00.07 release at \http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/DM814x_AM387x_PSP_04.01.00.07_Release_Notes

under "What's Supported" we find:

V4L2 Capture driver (Applicable to PSP04.01.00.06_patch2 release)

and under "Known Issues", we find:

There's a similar situation for the DM816X version. It sounds like we should be using the patch versions in order to get V4L2 capture, particularly since their release notes don't show the three "known issues". We know they are not the same as the later non-patched versions since the M3 binary is different, or at least renamed.

Is this a matter of what has been tested? Should we use the old patch or new non-patched versions? And what about SDOCM00085993? Isn't capture the point? And isn't a Kernel dump bad?

Hi,

I am not able to fully get your question. But V4L2 capture should work with PSP04.00.02.14 and PSP04.01.00.07 release also. You wont need any patch2 release. Regarding kernel dump, Its not harmful at this point of time. Kernel dump seen is a warning from kernel that we are trying to get spin_lock for considerably large amount of time then expected.

also confuses me, in spite of your valiant attempt to address the confusion of the OP.

You write:

"As of now you cant change decoder."

We can modify the TVP7002 sub-driver and use another decoder with appropriate VIP configuration changes, right?

Our current task is simple. Using an AM3894, we want to take in 24-bit RGB from an HDMI decoder, and get it into a frame buffer as RGB for further processing and transmission by the ARM Cortex and GigE. Do you see any "gotchas" starting from the PSP you point to above, and following your instructions posted recently here in the E2E forum and in the wiki's Video Capture Driver User Guide?

Hang in there, Hardik. I think 2012 is going to be a big breakout year for these products, and I look forward to using them in multiple applications.
