J721EXSOMXEVM: [EP2000] [DRA829V] [Camera] Enable video capture

Part Number: J721EXSOMXEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRA829V

Ti SDK version: 10.01.00.04

Hi Team,

We have recently enabled dual camera capture for our setup where Maxim9295/9296 serdes pair connected to DRA829V for camera capture. Since Ti is not supporting the serdes, we have configured the serdes along with the TI SDK 10.01.00.04 vision-app interface. The vision-app is running on MCU2_0 R5F core and vx_app_multi_cam.out app on A72(linux) helps to trigger capture and store the captured image. Please refer the related ticket "Dual camera capture error" for more info.

Now we are looking to enable video capture.

Since we are already able to store the frames available in the A72 linux buffers, I thought of using the app_multi_cam_codec application to encode the frames and store the video to sd card. Plaease let us know if understanding is correct.

CSI → VPAC → Vision Apps buffer(NV12) → appsrc → GStreamer → MP4

So, I was following this vision app user guide: Vision Apps User Guide: Multi Camera + Codec Application

But I am getting error when building "make edgeai".

image.png

For our setup, the openvx is running in the MCU2_0 R5F core. We are looking to only enable codec in the linux.

Kindly guide use how to configure the build system in this case?

Thanks

  • The toolchain path here contains these files related to toolchain:

  • Hi ,

    If you want to use GStreamer, you will need to build for EdgeAI. Instead of running `make edgeai`, you can change the TISDK_IMAGE variable within build_flags.mak to edgeai.

    This should avoid the issue.

    The specific toolchain issue you are seeing is because you are missing the expected toolchain. The aarch64-none-linux-gnu toolchain can be installed from ARM (https://developer.arm.com/downloads/-/arm-gnu-toolchain-downloads).

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    It seems making EDGAI enabled, will disable ETHFW. Is there any dependency here?

    //vision_apps_build_flags.mak

    ifeq ($(BUILD_EDGEAI),yes)
    BUILD_ENABLE_ETHFW=no
    endif

    We are having ETHFW running in MCU2_0 along with Vision app.

    My understanding is v4l2h264dec codec is only required in Linux. Please let us know if any EdgeAI dependency required in R5F?

    If we don't need EDGAI in R5F, please let us know how do we enable the EDGEAI only for linux, please provide any document/link for better understanding.

    THanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    In order to use GStreamer, EdgeAI support on the R5F cores is required. With GStreamer, the plugins communicate with the R5F cores to run the ISP applications.

    PSDK RTOS does support a codec API, and the codec can be utilized without Linux.

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi  ,

    We are not thinking to disable ETHFW from MCU2_0. So, we need to have codec in linux. Please suggest a way to that.

    Can we have a quick call? This will help each other understanding better and help moving the ticket faster?

    I am working form India(GMT+5.30). Please let me know we can schedule a short call.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    Our SDK does not support this feature. Can you not use the codec APIs within the PSDK RTOS?

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi  ,

    We are not considering to use the codec APIs in PSK RTOS.

    We want to use the codec APIs in A72 Linux.
    As I mentioned earlier, we are already receiving the frames in A72 linux, we just want to use codec there to encode the frames and store as a file(.mp4).

    Could you please help on that?

    I think there is misunderstanding here. Can we have a short call to resolve it? Because of the time zone differences, this thread is taking long.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hello Jared, we would like to have a short call to speed up the development, could that be possible? We need some clarification about the use of codec API

  • Hi  and ,

    We can have a short call if you need to. I don't think it's necessary though.

    Looking at the Makefiles and documentation, just building edgeai and installing to the SD card doesn't look like it will disable ETHFW.

    If you follow the instructions within the documentation: Multi Camera + Codec Application, the application should work without issue.

    CSI → VPAC → Vision Apps buffer(NV12) → appsrc → GStreamer → MP4

    This is correct, although the appsrc is kind of part of GStreamer.

    Your original issue with the toolchain can be resolved with the information I gave here:

    The specific toolchain issue you are seeing is because you are missing the expected toolchain. The aarch64-none-linux-gnu toolchain can be installed from ARM (https://developer.arm.com/downloads/-/arm-gnu-toolchain-downloads).

    The toolchain is installed when you run:

    $ ./sdk_builder/scripts/setup_psdk_rtos.sh

    Specifically, the setup script runs the linux-devkit.sh script, which installs the toolchains into the sysroots directory.

    You should be able to test your Maxim9295/9296 by editing the existing app_multi_cam_codec application and adding support for the Maxim devices (similar to what you did for app_multi_cam).

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi  ,

    Thanks!
    Let me try to integrate the changes.

    Please keep this thread open. I will be back.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi,

    I have integrated my changes to app_multi_cam_codec, I am getting this error while running the app_multi_cam_codec application,

    103.186875 s: VX_ZONE_ERROR: [vxUnmapImagePatch:2569] map address is null

    Please find the complete log here,

    /cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/complete_5F00_logs.txt

    As you know TI modules are very complex, I would need your support to debug the issue. Kindly help.
    It is ok to provide guidance or passive support.

    THanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    Did you run the following before running the script:

    $ source /opt/vision_apps/vision_apps_init.sh

    Can you send the output of sourcing the script as well?

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    Thanks for your support!

    Please find the logs along with vision_apps_init.sh,
    /cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/complete_5F00_logs_5F00_01.txt

    Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    It looks like there's an issue where MCU2_0 is unable to talk to the MCU2_1, which does not appear in your init script.

    MCU2_1 is what the DMPAC runs on, so it should be required.

    REMOTE_SERVICE: ERROR: CPU 4 is not enabled or invalid CPU ID
    REMOTE_SERVICE: ERROR: CPU 4 is not enabled or invalid CPU ID

    TIVX_CPU_ID_MCU2_1 = 4

    There may be something wrong with your application.

    I have verified that the demo works OOB with the J721E and IMX390. I also saw the vxUnmapImagePatch error:

  • Hi Jared,

    MCU2_1 is what the DMPAC runs on, so it should be required.

    We have VPAC, we are not using DMPAC as of now. Could you please let us know why we need DMPAC?

    In your example logs, could you please let us know,
    1) What is the image sensor format? In our case, the image censors are producing 3840x2160 RAW12 at 30 FPS.

    2) If possible, can you please run 2 cameras together and share logs?

    3) Is the output_video_0.mp4 running fine for you? For us two video files are generated but the size of those files are 0, no data in the files.

    4) I see the gstreamer input frame size is 1920x1080. Since our sensors are producing 3840x2160, do we need to downscale the frames or this is taken care by TIOVX configuration?

    5) In that case, how do we support 3840x2160 resolution video, if possible can you please share a log with 4K resolution?

    6) Can you please provide a patch to support 4K resolution?

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta Maity

  • Hi ,

    We have VPAC, we are not using DMPAC as of now. Could you please let us know why we need DMPAC?

    Looking at the code for the app_multi_cam_codec demo, the DMPAC shouldn't be necessary.

    I also don't see the logs that are surrounding your error message:

    REMOTE_SERVICE: RX: mcu2_0 (port 21) -> mpu1_0 (port 21) cmd = 0x00000005, prm_size = 0 bytes ... Done !!!

    Did you port the codec demo?

    Another note, CPU_ID 4 is the TIVX_CPU_ID_MPU_0 for the J784S4 and J721S2, did you somehow build for one of those platforms?

    2) If possible, can you please run 2 cameras together and share logs?

    I can, can you also run 1 camera by itself? It will be easier to debug one camera instead of two.

    3) Is the output_video_0.mp4 running fine for you? For us two video files are generated but the size of those files are 0, no data in the files.

    Yes.

    4) I see the gstreamer input frame size is 1920x1080. Since our sensors are producing 3840x2160, do we need to downscale the frames or this is taken care by TIOVX configuration?

    You can edit the gstreamer pipeline frame sizes in main.c.

    5) In that case, how do we support 3840x2160 resolution video, if possible can you please share a log with 4K resolution?

    I don't have a 4K camera to test.

    6) Can you please provide a patch to support 4K resolution?

    Edit the sizes in the set_ref_pool_defaults function.

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    Your response is very concise and confusing for us.

    Can we have a short call to discuss?

    Can you please let us know your working time? I will schedule a call.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    Can you please let us know your working time? I will schedule a call.

    I work from 9 to 5 CST.

    When porting the app_multi_cam_codec demo, you should ensure that your pipeline maintains the same resolution/framerate.

    4) I see the gstreamer input frame size is 1920x1080. Since our sensors are producing 3840x2160, do we need to downscale the frames or this is taken care by TIOVX configuration?

    If you read through the main.c for the app_multi_cam_codec demo (vision_apps/apps/basic_demos/app_multi_cam_codec/main.c), you can see that the encoder pool's width and height are set in set_ref_pool_defaults. These values are eventually fed to set_codec_pipe_params, then construct_gst_strings.

    The construct_gst_strings function creates the gst pipelines. By default, there is no downscaling done on the video streams, but then this results in a size mismatch between the sensor and the gst pipelines. If you edit the set_ref_pool_defaults function, you can correct this discrepancy.

    Another option would be to add a multiscaler node, but that would be more complex.

    This demo, by default, supports the IMX390. You will have to do the porting to your 4k sensor.

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    Thanks for explaining!

    I have ported multi_cam_codec demo, also enabled gstreamer logs. Here is what I observe,

    With 4K Gstreamer pipe configuration and one camera enabled, the video is not stored. Please find the configuration files, logs and graph output files.

    /cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/output_5F00_4k_5F00_single_5F00_cam_5F00_01.zip

    With 1080p Gstreamer pipe configuration and one camera enabled, the video is getting stored. But looks like video frames are small part of the original frames. It is not scaled frame/full frame view. Please find the configuration files, logs and graph output files.

    /cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/output_5F00_1080p_5F00_single_5F00_cam_5F00_01.zip

    Is there anything we need to optimize to get 4K video output?

    I work from 9 to 5 CST.

    Your working time, will be very late for India time. Is there anyone from India team can take up this ticket. That would be great for us.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    Is there anything we need to optimize to get 4K video output?

    Do you have the correct parameters set for when app_querry_sensor is called? Is the sensor object initialized with the 4K image width/height?

    Your working time, will be very late for India time. Is there anyone from India team can take up this ticket. That would be great for us.

    Not currently.

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    Do you have the correct parameters set for when app_querry_sensor is called?

    Yes, frames are received and getting stored when en_out_capture_write is enabled with 4K resolution.

    Is the sensor object initialized with the 4K image width/height?

    Yes.

    To fast track this thread, I am scheduling a call on the CST Tuesday morning, please let me know if require postponing.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    The J721E does not support 4K encoding.

    From the documentation:

    ENCODER does not support resolutions greater than 1080p due to hardware limitations. No more than 2 channels can be processed in parallel. Higher framerates are supported for 1080p when only 1 channel is in use as it will split the load across both the hardware pipes. Max framerate for a single 1080p channel is 60fps.

    From the TRM:

    6.8.1 ENCODER Overview
    The ENCODER is capable of supporting:
    • 1x 1080p60 video stream encoding or
    • 2x or 3x 1080p30 video stream encodings

    You will have to move to a different device if you would like to encode 4K video. For example, the J721S2 or J784S4 both support 4K encoding.

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    Thanks for the information!

    Since 4K is not an option, I will work on 1080p video output option.

    As I was mentioning earlier,
    With 1080p Gstreamer pipe configuration and one camera enabled, the video is getting stored. But looks like video frames are small part of the original frames. It is not scaled frame/full frame view. The logs are available in my previous comment.

    I was looking into this, it seems the existing app_multi_cam_codec application support 1920x1080 as both input and output frame size.

    Since for us, the input is 3840x2160 and output is 1920x1080, I think the existing LDC LUT is not working as expected.

    So, how do we get a LDC LUT which will have 3840x2160 input frame size and 1920x1080 output frame size?

    Also, could you please share your email id, I was looking to schedule a call. A short call will help clarifying many things.

    Thanks and Regards,

  • Hi ,

    So, how do we get a LDC LUT which will have 3840x2160 input frame size and 1920x1080 output frame size?

    You can use the LDC to resize, but most use the multiscaler to resize. I you want to use the LDC to resize, you need to adjust the table width and height and the frame width and height.

    You would have to adjust the input and output values to change from:

    • Input: 1920x1080
    • Output: 1280x720

    to:

    • Input: 3840x2160
    • Output: 1920x1080

    Below is a snippet of code that is used when downscale is enabled.

            if (1 == obj->downscale && status == VX_SUCCESS)
            {
                obj->scalerObj.output[0].width = obj->enc_pool.width;
                obj->scalerObj.output[0].height = obj->enc_pool.height;
                obj->scalerObj.output[0].arr = obj->enc_pool.arr[0];
                status = app_create_graph_scaler(obj->context, obj->capture_graph, &obj->scalerObj, obj->ldc_out_arr_q[0]);
                APP_PRINTF("Scaler graph done!\n");
            }

    Also, could you please share your email id, I was looking to schedule a call. A short call will help clarifying many things.

    I will email you.

    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    I have modified below changes,

    //vision_apps/apps/basic_demos/app_multi_cam_codec/multi_cam_codec_ldc_module.h
    LDC_TABLE_WIDTH     (3840)
    LDC_TABLE_HEIGHT    (2160)

    //vision_apps/apps/basic_demos/app_multi_cam_codec/multi_cam_codec_ldc_module.h
    obj->enc_pool.width = 1920;
    obj->enc_pool.height = 1080;
    obj->dec_pool.width = 1920;
    obj->dec_pool.height = 1080;

    //vision_apps/apps/basic_demos/app_multi_cam_codec/multi_cam_codec_ldc_module.h
    poolObj->width = 1920;
    poolObj->height = 1080;

    Enabled Downscale.
    Please let me know if I am missing any change.

    With this changes, I see the LDC output frames are of size 3840x2160 and the images are full image.

    But the video generated is full green. Not sure what is went wrong!

    Please find the attached logs,

  • Hi ,

    obj->dec_pool.width = 1920;
    obj->dec_pool.height = 1080;

    dec_pool.height needs to be 1088.

    Can you disable en_decode?

    With this changes, I see the LDC output frames are of size 3840x2160 and the images are full image.

    Does this mean the images coming from the LDC are correct? If you enable en_out_img_write, is the image correct?

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    en_decode is already disabled.

    Does this mean the images coming from the LDC are correct?

    Yes, it's kind of correct, though the distortion is not completely corrected.

    If you enable en_out_img_write, is the image correct?

    when, only en_out_image_write is enabled(1), there is no frame stored.

  • Hi ,

    Currently still debugging, the issue also visible on the IMX390.

    The command to set the coefficients needs to be sent after the verify graph call. I am testing/debugging sending the command after the verify, currently.

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi ,

    Following is the patch to set the coefficients. Downscaling is now working without issue for 1x IMX390.

  • Hi  ,

    With the changes above, video capture is working now.
    Thanks you for the changes.

    The video is scaled from 4K to 1080p now.
    But there are two things I observed:
    1) For us, the sensor is producing frames of 30 FPS(we have verified using logs at the A72 linux), but the produced video is 22.5 fps.
    2) Lens distortion is not fully corrected and the video frames are not smooth/clear compare to the RAW images.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sumanta

  • Hi ,

    I'm not sure why the produced video is 22.5fps. The fps when downscaling for the IMX390 is 30fps.

    2) Lens distortion is not fully corrected and the video frames are not smooth/clear compare to the RAW images.

    You will likely need to tune the LDC to fix that issue. Please open a different ticket for that.

    Regarding the video frames not being smooth/clear, is that before or after the image is scaled?

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi  ,

    Sure, I will create another support ticket for the LDC correction.

    You can close this thread.

    Thanks for your support!

  • Hi ,

    Can you mark the thread as resolved?
