CCSTUDIO: CCSTUDIO: Issues with Silent Installation of CCS

Part Number: CCSTUDIO

Hello, I am a Parker Hannifin employee working with the CCS 11.2.0 installer from below.
Version: 11.2.0.00007 Release date: Apr 8, 2022 Windows single file installer for CCS IDE  — 1120166 K from www.ti.com/.../11.2.0.00007

When I use
.\ccs_setup_11.2.0.00007.exe --mode unattended --enable-components PF_HERCULES,PF_C28
from an admin command prompt, the install worked.

When I use the above command from our SCCM service (IT managed, uses system install, no user), it fails with the attached logs.
(Note, this file unpack/copy issue was repeated twice, only showing one set of logs).ccs_install_11.2.0.00007.log ti_emupack_9.7.0.00213_install.log

This seems related to another Parker Hannifin ticket: https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/c2000-microcontrollers-group/c2000/f/c2000-microcontrollers-forum/1253473/tms320f280037c-ccs-12-3-0-install-issues/4756802?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=CCS%2520install%2520issue#

So my IT tried this install process using system install, no profile, on a VM with no internet and no FortiEDR.
He got the following error:
[15:37:43] CCS_WARNING: Can't create CCSExternalReferences file C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile/ti/CCSExternalReferences/11_2_0_00007: Error writing file C:/Windows/System32/config/systemprofile/ti/CCSExternalReferences/11_2_0_00007
it WAS able to create the C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\ti folder.

I also tried the v20.5.1 installer, with the same command line, and also got an issue with the ti_emupack_setup file copy, so this does not seem to be version dependent.

My IT beleives this is an issue with the installer, not with the SCCM system intall process.
What can we do to investigate this further in pursuit of a silent install method that works for our service?

Thank you for any advise,
Neal O'Hara

  • Hi Neal,

Does the installion also fail if using the GUI installer?

    Thanks

    ki

  • No, some of my co-workers have installed with the GUI (this requires a back and forth with IT for admin privileges each install).
We are working on this silent install method to add it too IT's permitted install service, and we ran into this 2nd issue with the system install.

  • I also tried the v20.5.1 installer, with the same command line, and also got an issue with the ti_emupack_setup file copy, so this does not seem to be version dependent.

Can you provide any install logs from that failed attempt? The logs would be in ./ccs/install_logs

  • Hello, is there any follow on actions with this installer issue?
Has anyone been able to replicate the issue?

    Thank you,

    Neal

  • Hi Neal,

Sorry for the delayed response. I've seen similar errors related to the ti_emupack installer before. Unfortunately we were never able to find the root cause. It was an error we saw most often with CCS Eclipse and I have not heard of issues with CCS Theia until now. We were hoping that issue does not happen with CCS Theia.

    So for:

So my IT tried this install process using system install, no profile, on a VM with no internet and no FortiEDR.

On this particular VM mentioned above, does the GUI installer succeed?

    Thanks

    ki

  • We have proven the GUI installer works in general. I can't say that we've tried it on an off network VM.
Well, to be clear, the GUI installer works when running from a user account with admin privileges.
The 'system install' method needs the silent install stuff, so there's not a LOT of commonalities between the two processes it seems.

They logs seem to show the same file error for this pretty deterministically, have you been able to duplicate it?
Or do we need to share more details about our setup?

Windows 11 Enterprise, Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1108.0

Not sure what else to share.

  • They logs seem to show the same file error for this pretty deterministically, have you been able to duplicate it?

No. The main issue is that this issue is not easily reproducible. It just happens to specific users (and for them it always occurs). It is likely very environment specific. It is why we were never able to get down to the root cause despite having prior similar reports. It was common with CCS Eclipse environment but much less so with CCS Theia. In these affected environments, CCS will not install at all - both GUI or CLI. That is why I asked if you can install via GUI on the VM. I am going to guess that it will fail.

There is a crude workaround that involved extracting a pre-packaged zip file. If you are interested in this workaround, please start a private E2E conversation with me.

    Thanks
