AM62L: Can H264 decoding be done in AM62L

Hi,

We are starting a new product development .

Our requirements is to drive a 7 inch 1024x600 resolution display.

We will be having MP4 files so we require to decode them and then display them.

Can AM62L decode the mp4 files. I can see it doesn't have a dedicated decoder but can it be handled via software?

Frame per second required is 30.

Hi Rachit,

Yes you should be able to decode using the SW decoder (FFMEG- libav Gstreamer based plugin avdec_h264). This should be part of the SDK offering and Gstreamer 1.26 package.

Thank you for the clarification.

Could you please advise whether AM62L has been benchmarked for H.264 software decoding at 1024×600 @ 30 fps?

Our application will simultaneously run:

* Linux GUI displaying fare and distance information
* GNSS processing
* LTE connectivity
* H.264 video playback

Do you have any CPU utilization figures or reference benchmarks for a similar workload?

Hi Suren,

The above benchmarks are actually for processor and its very difficult to corelate with video decoding.

Video decoding is quite an important feature for our product.

I would like to confirm once more that can we decode for 1024x600 resolution @ 30 FPS or not ?

Is there any specific maximum bit rate above which it will show a visible lag ? I think the max bit rate will decide the fps , right?

Will there be any other bottlenecks that we should be looking out for ?

LTE and GNSS will be on UART so I don't think it will be heavy on the processor. Important part is the video decoding.

Can you suggest the evalution board for AM62L on which I can plug my display and test it .

Or If you have a board available on your end , maybe you could also test it. If that's possible?

Hi Rachit,

Since we are using the open source Gstreamer plugin on AM62x/AM62L, we work with third parties for optimization.

Here is the benchmark that we have done so far with regards to SW decoding.

With the resolution you are trying to benchmark, I feel you should be able to achieve it as its not Full HD resolution as you see from our benchmarking results.

Yes from this it does seem our resolution can be decoded. Can you share the document in which above info is mentioned?

In the image it also shows HW Decode(last line), we would like to know is that possible with AM62L as it doesn't have any HW decoder inbuilt.

We are planning to buy eval board for AM62L. We require the schematics of the eval board but they are in altium and orcad format. We use kicad. Can you share pdf file of the same?

Hi Rachit,

There is no document that has this information. It was done on AM62 and AM62P(Hardware decode) and we were able to validate it internally. So, was able to provide this information to you.
