C6A8168 NRND???? Is this a joke?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320DM8168

Hi,

we are developing a project using C6A8168, and we aim to use 1.5GHz DSP (for which I have written other posts).

Now I cannot find C6A816x any more on ti web site, and searching for it I can see on the page, well emphasized, the Not Reccomended for New Design warning!!!!!!

Is this a joke?

C6A8xxx processors have been louched at the end of 2010, and the family has not yet been completed (in fact, the 1.5GHz DSP is not yet released), so I cannot believe they are already in NRND state.

TI suggest to use DM816x processor, that nearly doubles the cost, and DSP runs "as slow as" @1GHz.

I hope that there was an error

best regards

  • Hi,

Due to change in business direction, C6A816x will not be available for any new designs. We suggest moving to DM816x.

Also, there's no plan to continue on 1.5GHz C6A816x parts.

  • Also, please work with your local TI sales representative for more details like pricing.

  • Wow.

    Unbelievable.

We've invested a SMALL FORTUNE into development on a new product that was to use the C6A8168. We've had to struggle with an ALPHA state PSP and incomplete documentation for this processor from day one. But we stuck it out, gritting our teeth and trusting in TI to eventually sort everything out. And also for the promised 1.5 GHz parts (that we SO DESPERATELY NEED) to become available.

And now this is the reward: our variant is killed off without any warning and we are stuck on another that is 70% more expensive and 33% slower than what we planned for.

We've designed in no less than 58 different TI line items into our product. A total of 176 TI devices per unit.

Perhaps we should also consider "a change in business direction" away from TI then?

  • Yeah -- I concur. Not happy about this.

Whoever is responsible for this decision ought to have the website people update the description of the "C6000 DSP + ARM Processor platform" in all the relevant parts of the website, as how it reads now is just not true:

"C6000 DSP+ARM Processor Platform – The C6000 platform includes cost efficient, high performance processors comprised of devices with a floating and fixed-point DSP processor and an ARM Cortex-A8 processor with speeds up to 1.5GHz. Devices include integrated high-bandwidth peripherals, 3D graphics and display engines."

Given that NONE of the C6000 DSP+ARM Processor Platform products actually have a Cortex-AB, support over 456 MHz, have 3d Graphics or any truly high-bandwidth peripherals, there is actually nothing in that description that is correct anymore (which is a real shame).

  • More relevant news: In the DM8168 page: http://www.ti.com/product/tms320dm8168   TI now says that the device is only intended for high-volume OEMs and ODMs developing video security, video conferencing, video phones and thin/zero client applications.

    So, not good news.
