Linux/PROCESSOR-SDK-AM57X: AM571x IDK resets during kernel boot

Hello everyone, I have an AM571x-EVM board. Using the SD Card generated via the TI's SDK, the board struggles to boot and show the terminal in the console.

It "resets" somewhere along the boot sequence and it does this repeatedly. I am using power supply from GlobTek, and I don't believe it is the issue of lack of power. This happen with and without the LCD screen.

I have attached the console output, but there is nothing that signifies the source of this reset.

Hi,

From your log file I see that this is an AM571x IDK board, and that you are using the standard Linux release. However standard Linux is not supported on AM57x IDK boards. See "Supported Platforms" on the SDK download page: software-dl.ti.com/.../index_FDS.html
You need to use the Linux-RT release: software-dl.ti.com/.../index_FDS.html

Hi Biser, according to this page - www.ti.com/.../processor-sdk-am57x, AM571x-IDK should be supported by the standard Linux. Additionally, this repeated reset issue occurs not 100%. Good chunk of the time it boots fine.

Where exactly did you see this information? The "Supported Platforms" on the SDK download page is the correct place to look.

On the page linked I above, it has a section called "Design Kits & Evaluation Modules (1)". It lists single IDK and it is AM571x. I guess I am misinterpreting this?

On your wiki - processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Processor_SDK_Supported_Platforms_and_Versions, it also lists Standard Linux and RT Linux for AM571x IDK.

Adam,

The non-RT package should definitely boot on the IDK. Is this the SD card that came in the box? Can you try another SD card?

Unfortunately, the log seems corrupted and I can't read all of it. Can you try to upload it again?

Hello, I have identified the problem to my power supply. I am using GlobTek 5V 6.5A power supply but it doesn't look like it's working to its specification. I swapped to a brand new identical unit and this problem has disappeared. I will probably look for more reliable power supply as the 2nd GlobTek could degrade overtime.

Great. Can you perhaps check peak power draw with the IDK and LCD? If it's exceeding 5v 4A as noted on the PCB, it's something we should take a note of.

Adam,

I'm using a 5V 3A, but I don't have the LCD attached. I just reseated it and the issue went away. Of course, as you indicated, it is all dependent on the state of the power supply and what the board needs at a specific time.

Good debugging to isolate the problem. Thanks for sharing your result.
