AM3352: pSLC mode

Hi Sitara support Team,

I would like to know about the pSLC mode of eMMC.

If all user data areas of eMMC are set to pSLC mode,
is there any problem to boot from eMMC?

Also, if you set the pSLC mode, the capacity will be halved.
In that case, does the capacity of the eMMC used by MMC 1 be 8 GB
or more in the state before setting the eMMC to pSLC mode?

eMMC: IS21ES04G-JQLI(eMMC 5.0 interface)

Best regards,
Kanae

  • I will need to discuss this with our software teams.

  • I was told AM335x has successfully booted from eMMC devices operating in pSLC mode.

I do not understand your second question. Please try to re-phase the question.

    Paul
  • Hi Paul,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand that AM335x can boot from eMMC devices operating in pSLC mode.

Regarding my second question, there is the following limitation on TRM,
"MMC1 supports booting from eMMC/eSD/managed NAND memory device with 4GB capacity or greater."

When I set eMMC devices operating in pSLC mode with MMC1 of AM335x,
do I have to use eMMC device with 8GB or greater in the state before setting pSLC mode?
Because the eMMC capacity of 8GB will be 4GB in pSLC mode.

Or can I use eMMC device with 4GB in the state before setting pSLC mode?
The eMMC capacity of 4GB will be "2GB" in pSLC mode but is it OK?

    Best regards,
    Kanae

  • Hi Paul,

If you feel it is difficult to understand my question,
please point out the uncleared expressions.

  • I understand your question now. However, I need to get an answer form our software team.

  • Hi Paul,

    Thank you for your reply.

I am looking forward to having your Software Team's answer as soon as possible.
Because my customer needs to know it, could you please check the plan to reply?

    Best regards,

  • They replied today and said the size of the device has no relation to pSLC mode. The size requirement is related to the CMD1 response.

I was told size related support essentially depends on the response to CMD1 not on the actual size. If card’s user data area is 4GB or more, the ROM boot code expects the CMD 1 response to be 0x40ff8080,  - as long as the response is this, the card will work ok. If the card’s user data size is 4Gbyte or more and the response to CMD1 is 0x00FF8080 the card will not work with the ROM boot code.

They are not aware of any issue related to reading data from a device configured to operate in pSLC mode.

    Regards,

    Paul
