Compiler/TDA4VM: Boot U-boot from EMMC

Part Number: TDA4VM

Tool/software: TI C/C++ Compiler

Hi TI members:

I study the related thread , and try to let our customer board boot u-boot form emmc.

Our SDK use TI Linux 07_00 version.

1. Because our customer board have one SPI flash and one EMMC, so I first confirm our image can boot to kernel successfully by OSPI(bootloader) + EMMC(rootfs) setup, main_uart log as

D:\Virtualbox\Sharefolder\V3GA\Sandro\windows>

every command seem work successfully.

after that I change the dip switch settings to eMMC mode and  power-on customer board again.

SW 8:

1    2    3    4    5    6    7    8
On Off Off Off Off Off Off Off

SW 9:

1    2    3    4    5    6    7    8
Off On Off Off Off Off Off Off

Because Our customer board boot mode pins are no different with TI TDA4 EVM board,

I guess I can get some log like "Trying to boot from MMC",

But in fact, there is nothing pup-out form main-uart.

So I can't figure-out what status our board was.

Is there any way can help us to debug what happened?

  • Hi Sentinen Chen,

    Can you try using the u-boot commands as per the thread you referred:

    => mmc dev 0 1
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} tiboot3.bin
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x0 0x400
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} tispl.bin
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x400 0x1000
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} u-boot.img
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x1400 0x2000
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} sysfw.itb
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x3600 0x800

    Below commands are very very essential for you to boot from the boot partition of eMMC as per the dip switch settings that you have used:
    => mmc partconf 0 1 1 1
    => mmc bootbus 0 2 0 0

    Best Regards,

    Keerthy

  • Hi Keerthy:

    I use OSPI boot first, and then I try those command, and log as below

    => mmc dev 0 1
    switch to partitions #1, OK
    mmc0(part 1) is current device
    => fat
      fatinfo fatload fatls fatmkdir fatrm fatsize fatwrite
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} tiboot3.bin
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x0 0x400

    MMC write: dev # 0, block # 0, count 1024 ... 1024 blocks written: OK
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} tispl.bin
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x400 0x1000

    MMC write: dev # 0, block # 1024, count 4096 ... 4096 blocks written: OK
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} u-boot.img
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x1400 0x2000

    MMC write: dev # 0, block # 5120, count 8192 ... 8192 blocks written: OK
    => fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} sysfw.itb
    => mmc write ${loadaddr} 0x3600 0x800

    MMC write: dev # 0, block # 13824, count 2048 ... 2048 blocks written: OK
    =>
    =>
    =>
    => mmc partconf 0 1 1 1
    => mmc bootbus 0 2 0 0
    =>

    It seem no error happened.

    but after I change the dip switch settings to eMMC mode and  power-on our board,

    There is still nothing output form main_uart.

  • Hi Sentinen Chen,

    Could you try the same steps on TI TDA4VM board just to check if that is working for you?

    Best Regards,
    Keerthy

  • Hi Keerthy:

    I find there is one error of yesterday test,

    because our customer board didn't have sd-card connecter,

    I use below command should not have any effect.

    fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} tiboot3.bin
    fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} tispl.bin
    fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} u-boot.img
    fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} sysfw.itb

    By the way, I also try to load images form OSPI-flash, but the result still can't boot

    fatload sf ${loadaddr} tiboot3.bin
    fatload sf ${loadaddr} tispl.bin
    fatload sf ${loadaddr} u-boot.img
    fatload sf ${loadaddr} sysfw.itb

    I will try those command on TI-EVM board ASAP.

  • Hi Keerthy:

    1. After compare with TI-EVM board,

    Now I can use below dfu_util command to let our customer board boot form emmc

    board side:
    => setenv dfu_alt_info ${dfu_alt_info_emmc}
    => dfu 0 mmc 0
    => mmc partconf 0 1 1 1
    => mmc bootbus 0 2 0 0

    PC side:
    # dfu-util.exe -c 1 -i 0 -a 2 -D tiboot3.bin
    # dfu-util.exe -c 1 -i 0 -a 3 -D tispl.bin
    # dfu-util.exe -c 1 -i 0 -a 4 -D u-boot.img
    # dfu-util.exe -c 1 -i 0 -a 6 -D sysfw.itb

    but I still can't download successfully form OSPI_flash by fatload tool.

    2. As my understand, the both commands will flash u-boot to emmc boot partiton.

    Is it possible to create two partition(boot & rootfs) on emmc, just like the script to create SD-Card partitions.

    Our final goal is flash QNX+Vision_Apps into EMMC.

    But right now the flash way will let u-boot was flashed into EMMC boot partition,

    and the boot partition size is not enough for QNX+Vision_Apps.

    Can you try the manual way to load u-boot using fatload on the TI TDA4VM does it work?

  • Hi Keerthy:

    Can you follow the instructions given:

    [Resolved] TDA4VMXEVM: emmc booting issue - Processors forum - Processors - TI E2E support forums

    Ans: Thanks your information.

    But it seem still boot form eMMC boot partition.

    And I create a new thread to discuess about QNX boot form emmc0t12 partiton.

    So this thread I will close first.

  • Hi Sentinen Chen,

    Please create a new thread for QNX boot form emmc0t12 partition so that it can be assigned to
    the right owner.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Keerthy:

    Yes, below is the new thread
