AM3356: Inquiry about eMMC’s Low Power mode

Part Number: AM3356

Hi Experts,

My customer is developing their system with AM3356(Processor SDK version:06_03_00_106). Customer is using eMMC (u-boot), and, they would like to set eMMC to Low Power Mode. Is Linux-SDK supporting this ? if so, could you teach how customer should do this configuration, please?

I suppose almost power-line is off after entered Standby mode. I’m not sure if it is possible to do so in Active mode

Can I have Expert’s advice/comments on this, please?

Best regards,

Miyazaki

  • Hi Miyazaki-san,

Your query has been assigned to the expert. Due to US holidays, the response will be delayed.

  • Hello Takayuki,

Please tell us a little about your customer's use case.

    * Is EMMC the boot media for AM335x, or is it used for something else?

    * Have they measured EMMC as consuming a lot of power while the AM335x is in a low power state?

Biser's reply to Post Power consumption of Beaglebone Black sleep mode indicates that eMMC is expected to only consume tens of uA if the processor is not making read/write accesses. So I would not expect you to need to transition EMMC peripheral to sleep mode. However, I am reassigning this to a hardware engineer to double-check my thought process.

    Regards,

    Nick

  • Are you asking if the IO supply to the AM335x IOs connected to the eMMC device can be turned off to consume power?  If so, the answer is no. The IO power supplies must be valid before power-on reset (PWRONRSTn) is released and remain powered until the entire device is powered off. The eMMC device must also remain powered.

    Regards,
    Paul

  • Hi Nick, Paul,

Thanks for your comments on this.

Since customer’s system is mobile system, they would like to reduce power consumption as possible. Therefore, they are asking this. I shared your expert’s comments with our customer. I’d like to wait for customer’s feedback for a while.

    Best regards, Miyazaki
