DAC38RF82: Switching speed

Part Number: DAC38RF82
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC38RF89

Hi,

What is the max switching speed that can be achieved from one frequency to another frequency via JESD204B?

Thanks & Regards,

Naveen.A

  • Hi Naveen,

If you are referring only to the JESD input data, then this is refered to as the maximum input data rate. The Input rate max depends only on the DAC configuration being used (resolution, sample rate, interpolation). This DAC can operate at 9 GSPS output data rate while the input datarate is also 9 GSPS, only when using an 8-bit resolution (1x interpolation mode). If you use choose a higher resolution (such as 16-bit) and still want the DAC output to sample at 9 GSPS, then the maximum input data rate is reduced to 2250 MSPS using either 41121 or 82121 LMFS mode due to excessive SerDes speeds, which is where the interpolation factor comes in. These operating mode options are shown in Table 9. JESD204B Formats for DAC38RF82 and DAC38RF89 of the datasheet.

If referring to the switching speed of the NCO, unfortunately this device does not have any fast frequency hopping option, so the switching speed is limited by the timing requirements of the SPI interface and the writes to the NCO registers.
