TDC7200: Can I put the same signal into the START and STOP?

Hi Experts,

Seeking your advise on this query using the TDC7200:

I understand the TDC is normally used with a separate START and STOP signal. Can I put the same signal into the START and STOP? And measure the timing gap between consecutive pulses? I have a signal with square pulses of 100ns duration. The pulses are separated by (for example) 200us then 800us then 200us then 800us then 200us... I'm hoping to connect the same signal to the start and stop so that it will continuously measure the timing gaps. i.e. each stop signal will also be a start signal.

Thank you.

Archie A.

  • Hey Archie,

Thanks for posting to the sensing forum! It could possibly work to make these measurements, but you would need to setup the device a little different such as the device begins the measurement when START goes low and when STOP goes high. The reason being the TDC7200 needs some a couple of nano seconds from the START signal to the STOP signal in order to complete a measurement, if the device triggers at both START and STOP at the same time then you dont have those 12ns between measurements. So setting one signal to begin the measurement on a rising edge and the other at the falling edge should allow you to make the measurement when the START and STOP are tied together.

This would require some testing since I have not done this kind of test in the past before. I hope this helps!

    Best,
