TDC7200EVM: COM port doesnt show up & MSP430 update issue

Part Number: TDC7200EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7200, MSP-EXP430F5529LP,

I am working with TDC7200 EVM, the user manual refers EVM connect with MSP430 Launch Pad (MSP-EXP430F5529LP)

Below is the user manual

https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/snau177/snau177.pdf?ts=1672166659235&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Ftool%252FTDC7200EVM%253FkeyMatch%253D%2526tisearch%253Dsearch-everything%2526usecase%253Dhardware

I followed step 5.2 and updated the FW. (this was done without connecting the TDC7200EVM to the MSP430)

I did not see any change on the COM port after the update. I checked for step 5.3 but not device as TDC7200EVM showed up.

Secondly I tried to update the MSP430 with the TDC7200EVM connected to it.

Now when I try to follow step 5.2.3 the TDC7200EVM GUI freezes and never recovers.

And at this point of time I am not able to update anything on MSP430 eval kit.

Thanks,

Bhavya

  • Hello Bhavya,

I have two clarification questions for you on this.

    • Did you test plugging in the TDC7200EVM after the first firmware update?
    • Can you remove the TDC7200EVM and reflash the MSP board following the same steps or does that still cause an error?
      • If you can reflash it, can you try unplugging the MSP board before connecting the TDC7200EVM and then reconnecting the MSP board to the computer?

    Best Regards,
    Justin Beigel

    • Did you test plugging in the TDC7200EVM after the first firmware update? Yes. The device manager image posted in the previous message is how it shows up when MSP+TDC shows up after programing.
    • I removed TDC and trying to reflash but the GUI freezes all the time. I have to go to task manager and close it. When I reopen it and try to update FW again the same freeze shows up. Although now I am able to see MSP under device manager but cannot flash it.
    • Another point is earlier LED102 and LED2 used to be on (initially before programing). Right now only LED102 is on.
  • Hello Bhavya,

If the device is flashed with the correct firmware you should see the USB Serial Device as shown below. When the MSP is not flashed correctly or if its BSL mode you will only be able to see the MSP Application and MSP Debug Interface as shown on your screen.

Have you been able to open the MSP430 USB Firmware Upgrade tool (images below) this can be opened by using the GUI using the update firmware button. If this is not working out there are other methods you can open the executable for the BSL_USB_GUI directly under the following filepath: C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\TDC720xEVM\MSP430 USB Firmware Upgrade Example

If the method above is not working it is possible the exe file is being blocked from running by your computer. There are other ways to update the firmware with the firmware text file that is part of the download. Let me know if you are not able to open the MSP430 USB Firmware Upgrade tool (BSL_USB_GUI.exe) there is another way to update the firmware using code composer studio.

    Best,

    Isaac

  • Thank you Issac.

I was able to flash MSP30 using this method

C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\TDC720xEVM\MSP430 USB Firmware Upgrade Example.

Now I see this under device manager.

  • Hello Bhavya,

I am glad this worked out, feel free to start another post if you have any other questions!

    Best,

    Isaac
