TMP411-Q1: Extend temp range

Part Number: TMP411-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP411

Hi TI expert,

Few questions would like to check with you.

1. The Table shows that different version of TMP411-Q1 has different default Local/Remote temp limit.

I notice we can change "Configuration Register" bit 2 to "1" to extend the range.

Does it means once we change the bit 2, we can measure the temp from -40oC~85oC even we use the TMP411/A/B/C-Q1 version?

2. The datasheet mentioned that the 21oC in extended temp mode but I'm not sure what does that mean.

And the 21oC does not match the description in the Table 6.

3. Since the ABS max rating table shows the operating temp range is able to support from -55oC ~ 127oc so I believe the TMP411A/B/C/D version can measure the temp range within it, am I right?

Looking forward to your reply.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting to the Sensors forum.

    1. This table is simply meant to show the I2C address and default values stored in the local temperature high limit and remote temperature high limit registers for each device. The table shows that TMP411A/B/C-Q1 have different I2C addresses (0x4C, 0x4D, 0x4E) and have the same default value of 85 C stored in the local temperature high limit and remote temperature high limit registers when operating in standard temperature mode. TMP411D-Q1 has an I2C address of 0x4C, and has a default value of 110 C stored in the local temperature high limit and remote temperature high limit registers when operating in standard temperature mode.

Each device can measure temperature from 0 C to 127 C in standard temperature mode, and from -55 C to 150 C in extended temperature mode. The device can be switched to extended mode by writing bit 2 of the configuration register to 1, as you mentioned.

    2. The 21 C notes you are pointing out in the Limit Registers section are indicating that the default value of 85 C that is stored in the local temperature high limit and remote temperature high limit registers for the TMP411A/B/C-Q1 will correspond to a value of 21 C if the device is switched into extended mode, which reflects the following note in the datasheet.

    3. Yes, the abs max operating temperature range for the TMP411A/B/C/D-Q1 is -55 C to 127 C and the devices can measure temperatures within that range. Operating the device outside of this range may cause damage to the device. Please keep in mind that the sensor accuracy in the electrical characteristics section is specified from -40 C to 125 C. Temperature accuracy specifications outside of this range are not guaranteed.

    Best regards,

    Jesse
