LM96063: Fan control

Part Number: LM96063
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AMC80, LM96080, LM96194, LM94, LM96000, LM93

Hi,

We currently have a project for the Intel Q670 platform. We have a total of 4 fans (2x SMART FAN and 2x non-Smart 12V FAN). However, due to the limited number of pins on the board, when using other functions, we have already used up the pins for the 2x SMART FAN.

As a result, the 2x 12V FANs cannot be controlled for speed, and they do not appear in the BIOS HW Monitor (they are not even listed as items). We are concerned that our customers won't be able to monitor the operation of these 2x 12V FANs.

Could you please advise if TI has any recommended ICs that would allow the 2x 12V FANs to be displayed on the HW monitor? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

Here is a link to our Fan Controller products: https://www.ti.com/sensors/temperature-sensors/digital/products.html#1241=Fan%20Controller&

Generally speaking, these products have a TACH input to monitor fan speed and provide a PWM output to control fan speed. Fans which have a 4 pin connector have both TACH output and PWM input. Fans with a 3 pin connector only have TACH output, but their speed can still be controlled by our PWM through the fan's power pin.

The AMC80, LM96080 both have two TACH inputs, but no PWM outputs.

The LM96194, LM94, LM93 and LM96000 all have at least two PWM outputs and TACH inputs.

These devices all connect to the I2C bus, so firmware would need to be written to interface with them through I2C. I don't have visibility into what your firmware supports.

    thanks,

    ren
