MMWCAS-DSP-EVM: No running log is shown from USB Serial Port

Part Number: MMWCAS-DSP-EVM

Tool/software:

Hi MMWCAS Champ !

My customer purchased MMWCAS-DSP-EVM and MMWCAS_RF-EVM.

They tried to setup the Cascaded Demo Setup following the mmWave Studio Cascade user guide introduced in MMWAVE STUDIO_2.1.0.0.

https://dr-download.ti.com/software-development/ide-configuration-compiler-or-debugger/MD-h04ItoajtS/02.01.00.00/mmwave_studio_cascade_user_guide.pdf

Also programmed SD Card with pre-built image sdimage_3_7_1.img.xz in C:\ti\mmwave_studio_02_01_00_00\mmWaveStudio\PlatformBinaries\TDA2Firmware using etcher v1.5.39.

However no log is shown even Boot Mode switch(SD Boot[0:5] 000011), Power supply, USB cable, USB Serial Port are properly setup.

Can you please let us know how to set MMWCAS EVMs to see the boot log from the EVM?

Thanks.

Regards,

Jack

  • Hi Kaushik

We could not find out any relevant topic in the link above what you gave.

Could you please let us know how to see Linux bootlog message when SD bootmode is used?

We would like to know whether the new MMWCAS-DSP-EVM  has the defect. Customer wants to return the problematic board to TI.

    Thanks and regards,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

As I understand, you have followed all the steps and what you are facing an issue is with respect to visualizing and interacting with the Linux boot image that was flashed.

    • You can use a tool such as TeraTerm (which can be downloaded over the web) to act as a console to send and receive information over UART.
    • You can refer to the TeraTerm settings provided in the same document.
    • Once that is set, power cycle the board.
    • You should see a log of some kind and here, you can enter the username as "root".
    • If there are different logs, please send a screenshot of the same. If the issue persists, kindly let me know.

    Regards,

    Kaushik

  • Hi Kaushik

I used putty with appropriate terminal setting.

Nothing is displayed in the terminal after 12V5A power on with SD boot image flashed.

What should I do for find out of root cause?

    Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

Need to get more information here. When you connect the SD card to your PC, after formatting it and flashing the Linux image, what does the disk appear to be? Do you see some hidden memory which is unusable? This can indicate whether the image has been successfully flashed and all steps till here were executed appropriately.

    Regards,

    Kaushik

  • Hi Kaushik

    Thanks for your kind reply.

I flashed a pre-built SD image using Balena Etcher, and immediately after flashing, the partitions are unknown partitions, inaccessible on Windows and only accessible on Linux.

I will try to flash the pre-built image again on Linux and update you with the results.
I am familiar with the process of flashing SD images and have been supporting AM-series and TDA-series processors for a while now, so it's not new to me.
It sounds like your board is broken, so at the very least, a diagnostic guide and if it is broken,
customer is requesting that we replace the board, can you walk me through the process?
Do I need to contact TI customer center, the purchase was made directly from ti.com.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

I understand your predicament. However, I am just making sure that all the right steps have been taken care of from the SW procedure point of view. If everything seems ok, then I will pass this thread on to a hardware expert to help you diagnose any hardware faults. Based on their judgement, they will suggest the steps to be followed further.

I flashed a pre-built SD image using Balena Etcher, and immediately after flashing, the partitions are unknown partitions, inaccessible on Windows and only accessible on Linux.

    This is the expected behavior.

I will try to flash the pre-built image again on Linux and update you with the results.

Let me know if this works.

In addition to this, can you let me know the revision of the EVM that you are currently using.

    Regards,

    Kaushik

  • Hi Kaushik

I tried the flashing their new board with Balena Etcher and Win32 Disk Imager using pre-built SD image.

UART is connected from Windows and Linux as well. Not able to see any boot log.

The MMWCAS-DSP-EVM Revision seems be the Rev.A1?

Can you also please let us know how to test Serieal or SPI Boot Mode to check if MPU is alive? It seems SD Boot mode does not work for now. I want to check another boot mode, then would like to ask H/W perspective check point.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

Let me forward your thread to the DSP EVM expert to provide assistance to you in this matter.

  • Thanks. Customer bought the board via Mouser 5~6 months ago. And they tried to evaluation from last month.

Since nothing works, they gave us the board few weeks ago. It does not work for SD boot.

The relevant pre-built image does not work for the board.

  • Hi TI

Mouser requested the failure analysis report when Customer asked return or repair.

Can you please help on this? How to handle this issue? Arrow does not support Board Defect Analysis support for now.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Jack

  • Hello TI Team,

Greeting. I am a technical representative in Mouser and was informed the issue from the customer.

I have reviewed two threads on this matter but it appears there is no result whether the boards are defective or not.

Could you please help to check and advise if any updates on this matter? Thanks.

    Best Regards,
