AWR6843AOPEVM: Use mmWave Demo visualizer to calculate RCS

Part Number: AWR6843AOPEVM

Tool/software:

Hi Ti Expert,

I hope to estimate the RCS of one corner reflector using a known RCS from another corner reflector.

I used the AWR6843AOPEVM in combination with the mmWave Demo Visualizer for measurements.

In the image below, I used a 2.43-inch corner reflector, and its peak value on the Visualizer was 112dB.

Then, I switched to a 3.2-inch corner reflector, and the measured peak value was 114dB, with a difference of about 1.7dB between the two.

However, when calculating the RCS using the physical dimensions, the RCS difference between the two corner reflectors is about 4.5dB.

I would like to ask if it is possible to perform such measurements using the Demo Visualizer.

Is this measurement result reasonable?

Thanks,
BR,

Vincent

  • Hi, Vincent:

Ideally, this method should work fine.  But you need to pay attention to several issues:

    1) The corner reflector can be treated as point target at this distance.

    2) The peak signal did not get into non-linear/saturation region of the receiver path.

    3) The corner reflector is the only reflective source at that distance.

I would recommend you to place the two targets at 1m to give a try, and test it in a very clean environment.  Make sure there is no other reflection from wall/floor and other clutter at the corner reflector distance.   You can check the range profile first with corner reflector removed to double check.

The other concern is that the actually peak may need some interpolation.
