I have a situation where the LM81 IC heats up. The surface feels warm-hot to touch and the temperature reported by the chip can be above 60deg.C (in an air-conditioned office). These chips still measure voltages correctly and seem to function correctly except for the temperature of the chip being higher.
The fault exists across different batches and was first noticed a couple of years ago. Some ICs will work fine (report a reasonable temperature), some will be on the warm side (eg. 45 deg.), while some will get hot (60+deg.). We use the chip only for voltage and temperature monitoring and not for fan monitoring/control.
