TMP006 quiescent current

Please note the following from the TMP007 product data sheet. The interface performance on the TMP007 is similar to the TMP006.

The quiescent current with serial bus OFF is typical 2uA

The quiescent current with serial bus ON is typical 36uA at 400KHz bus speed.

Hi Mayrim and Werner, 

I use a breakout board from Sparkfun. Datasheet is attached. I measured current in the Vcc line. I2C bus speed is 267kHz. After power up I send one command to the TMP006: to power down. After this SDA and SCL return high. This is what you mean with inactive bus right? There are no other devices on the bus.

Yes, SCL and SDA high are the bus idle or bus inactive mode.

In the TMP007 data sheet, http://www.ti.com/product/tmp007?keyMatch=TMP007&tisearch=Search-EN in section 8.2.1 a typical application circuit example is shown. It may be helpful to modify the Sparkfun board to match.

Schematically they are the same. However I just noticed that PCB layout of the Sparkfun breakout board (SEN-11859 
TMP006 Breakout) is bad. The pull up on DRDY# is not connected. So DRDY is floating. Could it be that this floating pin cause leakage current? I will reconnect the pull up and try.

Ok I tested it, the TMP006 on the Sparkfun breakout board still draws too much current and the current is not very stable. In active mode about 340uA and in standby mode about 80 uA. 

I also ordered a TMP006 breakout from Adafruit and in that board I measured 240 uA in active mode and 0.4uA in standby mode, which is exactly what I expected!

It may be that my Sparkfun breakout board and/or TMP006 on that board was somehow damaged. It may be ESD or mechanical damage. I could replace the TMP006 on the breakout board. If you interested in the result, I will try to reflow a new part

On the Sparkfun board, replacing the TMP007 requires extra care. It is a MEMS device, so more sensitive to physical damage than a standard IC. Also, need to keep reflow temp between 230 and 260C; and cannot have underfill or have flus underneath the device.

Would first try to make it look more like the sample circuit in the TMP007 product data sheet.. Try replacing the 10K pulldowns on A0, A1 with 0K resistors and match bypass cap per recomendationin data sheet. If that doesn't work, would try another Sparkfun board, the part may be damaged.

In any event, glad to hear the Adafruit board perfroms per spec,
