Fast capacitive sensor to measure 0.05 mm precission in 10mm range

Since i would use this on plasma pipe cutter I am not sure how inductive sensor will operate if at all, while plasma is cutting metal workpiece below.

I'm assuming you only need to measure the distance to position the cutter before the plasma shoots out? What did you have in mind in terms of sensor/system setup with regards to capacitive sensing? The reason I suggested inductive sensing is because it can be used to detect metal/conductive targets with high resolution - you can take a look at sections 1 and 2 of this app note to get a better idea of inductive sensing.

Yes, but would be somehow possible to measure it also during cutting?

The metal workpiece (target as you name it) is changing quite frequently - would this have negative impact on inductive measurement? Would it need another (different) coil?

It seems that capacity ymeasurement is dependent on less parameters - therefore more usfull from this point but precision of inductive measurement is very appealing.

Hi Zhivko,

I'm not sure either sensing solution would be able to measure the distance to the metal during cutting. Do you mean the metal properties will change? Another coil would be useful in removing environmental and temperature drift from the measurements.
